Here's a news story on a serious downside to all of the snow we've been receiving:

Officials Warn Of Carbon Monoxide Threat

I can relate to this since I have a high-efficiency furnace and, on Sunday morning, I had to clear out the vent because it was blocked and the heater was not running.

In addition to an automatic shutoff if the vent is blocked (which I'm surprised that any high-efficiency furnace would not have) this is also a reminder to the rest of us to make sure we have functional CO detectors throughout our homes.

One of the first things I installed in our new house. Althought the inspector tested for CO leakage when the boiler was running, I wanted one to be sure, especially since we live in the lower level of a split ranch duplex.

It is advisable for homeowners to wire 120-volt with battery backup CO detectors with UL compatible smoke detectors. By doing this correctly they will interlock the alarm signal with each other for early warning notification.
