Okemo visitors petition for return of Superpipe

A petition is circulating at Okemo Mountain to save the ski resort’s halfpipe. The upwards of 5,000 people behind the effort say it’s a local treasure with national significance.

The futures tour (basically just below World Cup level) canceled their scheduled 1/2 pipe comp that was set for Okemo in mid February (pretty sure it was scheduled for then). And Okemo once again said that they're not building it this year.

Unless you have some major paying event I just don't see the point of wasting all the time and resources required to build a superpipe. What resorts in the east still build one? I know Killington hasn't built one in years. I don't believe mount snow has either.

Superpipe has become a niche event. It's almost like skiing aerials these days. You don't hear people complain their local mountain doesn't have the facilities to practice their lay, tuck, tuck, triples. It probably only makes sense to have Superpipe facilities at Olympic training venues; Placid, Park City, Squaw etc

If that's the future then the field of competition will shrink to primarily just locals to those areas. From there, it's probably only a few decades till extinction.

Possibly. Like I said, it's faded already to the point of being almost like Aerials. Somehow that still hangs on as do numerous other niche sports such as bobsledding, skeleton etc.

Surprisingly, I have a neighbor on either the US bobsled or skeleton team. I forget which. We live 4.5 hours from Lake Placid.

does brattleboro have an active ski jump? i've barely been there but stayed last weekend. noticed a ski jump neon light thing as you enter town, and thought i spied a lit ski jump hill in the distance at night

Yes they do have an active ski jump. You drive right past it using the shortcut on the way to Stratton. I think Stratton is building a halfpipe now, not sure how superpipe it is but I'm impressed they are building one. Must have to do with their snowboarding heritage there. Love the old photos of the Burton team riders in the stairwell heading up to the bar in Sun Bowl lodge.

downtown brattleboro had more going on than i would have suspected, and much less vacancy than i expected. i spied 2 or 3 actual high end borderline trendy looking restaurants, and a very moderrn brewery, next to an art deco hotel/movie theatre situation. pretty nice little walkable downtown. also did a random drive about and some of the residential areas look pretty decent as well.

Yup, 2025 is year 103 (!!) for the ski jumping competition at Harris Hill in Brattleboro

The Harris Hill Ski jumping competition is typically held Presidents Day Weekend every year. Really cool thing to see in person, and the spectators put on quite a solid tailgating experience as well

Salisbury Ski Jump competition is this weekend. It is a good time if you are not heading north to ski. Ski jumpers are nuts!

Killington is building a halfpipe this year, I'm not sure if it's a superpipe but I heard they got the pipe dragon from okemo

I didn't think anyone build half pipes anymore because they are a huge waste of money and resources. Once Sugarbush stopped doing it I didn't pay attention and assumed everyone stopped. The old pipe dragons sucked and were always broken.

Brattleboro also has a smaller jump at Living Memorial Park. They just rebuilt it a few years ago after knocking it down about 25 years prior.

Does Stowe still have a halfpipe or is that another goner?
