I am planning to hike the Presidential Traverse sometime during the summer of 2025. I have already done quite a bit of research but I still have a couple of questions regarding overnight camping.
There will probably be three of us for this hike. We plan to start at Appalachia and end near the AMC Highland Center. We are experienced backpackers but do not plan to do the hike in one day. We will probably start on a Monday which means our first night would be at The Perch, and the second night (Tuesday) would be at the Nauman tentsite. I know we have the option of overnighting in the AMC huts, but we don't want to spend the money.
My questions are...
Does The Perch fill up quickly during weekdays in the summer? If so, what time should we plan to make it there to ensure we find three open spaces? Are the bugs / black flies bad in June, July, August? I sleep much better in my hammock than on a hard surface like a shelter floor or tent platform, so we would much prefer to use our hammocks over our tents. With that being said, how easy will it be for the three of us to find trees for our hammocks at the Perch?
My questions are basically the same for the Nauman tentsite, minus the questions about a shelter because I know that location doesn't have a shelter.
