Dick Durrance died on Monday. He went to Dartmouth, won 17 national championships over his career, and competed for the US Olympic Team in 1936. In addition to being a fantastic and winning skier, he helped develop many resorts out west including Sun Valley, Aspen, Alta, and Arapahoe Basin. He was an accomplished photographer and movie maker and an all around nice guy.

Note that the Olympic alpine skiing logo is based on Dick Durrance's slalom technique. He was the "Man on the Medal" for about 20 years starting in 1948, and all Olympic alpine medals bore his image until recent years. Durrance's legacy is one of the most important in US skiing.
