One of the most incredible musicians I have been fortunate enough to see. From Maynard Ferguson, Cannonball, Miles, Weather Report, Syndicate... what a catalog. One of the greatest pioneers of jazz fusion. Always surrounded by sensational musicians.

Saw the Zawinul Syndicate several times at Yoshi's in Oakland. 3rd or 4th time went with a coworkers parents who were about his age and went to every show in the area - he knew them by name. Joe & Badrena came and hung out with us between shows - so down to earth, just an incredible love of life. Still toured hard into his 70's. RIP Joe.

D@mmit. I must now play Mercy, Mercy, Mercy in his honor. I think I'll solo along with the recording. Maybe I'll do an honorary recording of it tomorrow, and share it with you all as a memorial to this fine man. What a talented and influential musician. Definitely a great loss for the music world. Sorry to see Weather Report dying off.

Saw Weather Report at Newport Jazz Festival in Saratoga in 1978 or so. Great show - Joe was dynamite that night. RIP........

Okay, here's my rough-draft tribute. I'll try to get a better cut tomorrow. I just recorded it, so I'm a bit tired. You might notice a timing pull or two. Sorry.

Anyway, forgive the rather crude recording... I didn't bring my recording gear out to CO with me. Just recording straight into the integrated mic port on the laptop.

The first solo section I played in pretty straight Zawinul style. I got a little creative with the second solo section and when for some variations on the alternate blues scale. I also threw in an alteration on the Bb chord during some of the head... instead of just playing [Bb - Bb/D - Eb - F], I went with [Bb13 - D altered - Eb - F#7 - F7 - Bb]. Just keeping things interesting

Here ya go: http://www.sugarbushhistory.com/Misc/mercrec.wav

Again, I hope to get a better cut tomorrow. Same concept, just cleaner (timing wise and solo wise).
