i am reticent to even provide specific recommendations, mainly bc of the lurkers on here. i guess i'll say this one tho bc i havent been staying there much and they seem to have vacancy week to week and i want the business to thrive (tho i suspect they are gangbustrs in the summer). if you dont mind ~35-40 to K, lake bomoseen lodge is an absolute gem. they have two lodge buildings on the lake and some cottages across the street. they have a really great bar and restaurant on site. it is clean, recently renovated, on a gorgeous lake that is full of ice fishers, very affordable for skiing, and is run by really nice people. as i mentioned, i presume their on-season is summer since the lake seems to have a big boating/fishing/swimming/bbq summer scene. being on the other side of rutland near castleton, its just far enough from skiing that the rooms are only like $120 a night in the winter
Yep, not too keen on giving up my information either.

We stayed at Bomoseen when the girl was at Castleton. Wouldn't call it luxury but not horrible either. Was in the fall so I'm not sure about the winter

I'm the other way around. I try to stay as close to the mountain as possible before my bank account collapse. (I'm not a morning person. So I'm really slow to get going. Any extra drive time end up eating into ski time)

So Rutland used to be a good compromise. But as everybody noticed, not any more. Though like I said, the Best Western prices fluctuate wildly. 2 weeks ago, I was able to find a room for $109 (AAA discount) on Friday & Saturday with only a few days out! But it went up to $299 when I looked again on Thursday for a friend. So by all means look there first. There're also quite many smaller lodge/BnB along Rt 4 and on the access road. Sometimes one can get a steal deal. Beats the overpriced dumps in Rutland of late.

I've been staying mostly on the east side lately also. But it was mostly because I've been combining downhill skiing with cross country, the latter puts me on the east side. Yes, it's significantly cheaper. Still, if I were skiing K multiple days, I wouldn't choose to stay on the east side.

i am typically fast asleep by 9 pm on ski days. sometimes even 8. sleeping any later than 530 am is difficult. i like driving and i like saving money. i dont like driving in hazardous weather. if i am sure it will be snowy in the morning i try to stay no further than rutland/k or manchester/stratton-magic or waitsfield/sugarbush. even closer if possible. most weekends i have plenty of time to wake up, get breakfast, drive an hour, and still be there 20 min before lifts.

The comfort inn worked out decent, low key. Magic skied well yesterday. low tide, but really solid day.never any line for black chair.
Pico was a gem today, alot more good trees than I remember there. Snow was great

Is the place on the left after sky ship gone? Loved that Motel. They let you shovel snow all night long. For real, for real...
nice owner

the valroc is on the right after passing skyeship driving east. that appears closed. on saturday there were zero cars and it was unpaved. they had grateful dead art in the lobby (pic below. famous gd image). i read some unsavory things about the owner once.

the turn of river lodge is on the left after passing skyeship driving west. pretty sure thats still there. stayed in an inn room there once. but its basically a hostel.

Stayed at the Nootka lodge in Woodsville NH Saturday night. Really nice place with good local foods and a DDs in the (-12 degree) morning.

hampton inn in general seems to try and position itself as higher end than the other comparable chains but in my opinion the quality difference isnt worth the price difference. once i'm over $200/night i am more inclined to book something independent/unique

I’m surprised allot of u guys don’t just join a ski house/lodge. There’s plenty of them around and many are looking for members.
I'm in one. Issue is many weeks and weekends are completely booked out months in advance. My clubs lodge is booked for the entire month of February...every room....and was even in October. Doesn't work for a typical east Coast season and playing the weather. You can cancel but it has to be 2 days before. You also have to book at least 2 days before your stay.

It's great for Early and Late season. February to March though good luck getting a room unless you book it before the season.

I had a season pass at okemo for a few years in the late 90s, a coworker talked me into joining the club in ludlowe one year, same issue. We only used it by calling in sick during the week, all in all no one (wife, work, me) was happy.

I feel the same way about Hampton Inn. At their price point, I'm looking into more fancy B&B's.

The Best Western is good at some price point. Not worth it on some dates when it's really pricy.

I haven't bought a pass for 2 years now. So haven't skied K in main season. When I did K in late spring, I always have all the hotels to choose from. I more often than not ended up at BW because they're pretty smart in their pricing at late season.
