Spector will become Sugarloaf's first female Head Professional, and will be in charge of all instruction at the Sugarloaf Golf School, including the Nike Junior Golf Camps. Sugarloaf is Maine's only location for the famed Nike camps.
"I am excited and honored to have the opportunity to come home to Maine to work at the #1 course in the state," Spector said. "I hope to bring my experience and enthusiasm to Sugarloaf to increase member activities and tournaments, and assist members and guests in total game improvement. I am looking forward to a fun-filled summer."
Spector has worked since 2007 as Assistant Golf Professional at the Gasparilla Inn and Club in Boca Grande, Florida, one of Golf Digest's 75 Best Golf Resorts, where she is in charge of tournament operations and teaches private lessons and junior clinics. During the summer months she has worked at numerous New England golf courses, including Lake Winnipesaukee and the Balsams in New Hampshire, Natanis and Val Halla Golf Club in Maine, and The Country Club in Brookline Massachusetts. She will begin work at Sugarloaf in mid-May.
Spector's seven women's Maine Amateur championships and her 2001 New England Women's Amateur title made her famous among Maine sports enthusiasts, and propelled her to a 2007 induction into the Maine Golf Hall of Fame. She attended the University of North Carolina on a full golf scholarship, and competed for the Tar Heels before graduating in 2004, winning the 2002 Pine Needles Invitational (a Division I NCAA event).
"We are thrilled to have Abby joining the Sugarloaf team," Sugarloaf General Manager John Diller said. "Anybody who followed Maine sports throughout the 90s knows the amazing things Abby has accomplished throughout her golf career, and I couldn't think of a better person to represent Maine's premier golf course."
The Sugarloaf Golf Club is Golf Digest's #1 course in Maine, a position it has held 26 times since the course first opened to the public in 1985. Known for its challenging layout and awe-inspiring vistas, the Robert Trent Jones, Jr. course has received numerous accolades from industry publications around the world.
