Crazy to see that place implode. Used to do an absolutely cranking business. Maybe the busiest year round property in town at one point due to the conference facilities. First place I worked when I moved to Stowe.

Wow, I didnt realize that place fell on hard times. When I lived in Vermont, that place was considered swanky; well, at least by Vermont standards. Speculation, but I'd guess all the true high-end lodging they opened near Spruce is what killed it. Even back-in-the-day it was pseudo high-end lodging, but when you're the tallest midget you're the starting center on the Lilliputian basketball team.

I stayed at the Stoweflake not too long ago, last spring I think. While it seemed a bit dated, the rooms were fine and the spa was open. Upgrades were actively in progress, but the restaurants were closed, except for breakfast. Hopefully it is purchased cheap, leaving some cash to bring it back to it's former status. I liked the two minutes walk to the Alchemist

McCarthy's was simply a case of the owner wanting to retire and the daughters not being interested in taking the business over.

One of my best friends in high school's family owned two units at Stoweflake that we would use when skiing Stowe. Remember several years later (late '90's) a good work friend was going to elope midwinter and asked where I'd go to do so. I told him there isn't even a second choice, Stowe and you stay at the Stoweflake. They had a great time.
But yeah, before Spruce high-end ville, Stoweflake was about the highest end lodging you could get in Stowe. I guess the super high-end lodging on hill has dried up a lot of their business on that end of the spectrum.

Nope, I would say the Top Notch was nicer.

I used to stay at the Stoweflake with my wife as a getaway present once a year. We like the location and the accomodations were nice. Top Notch was cost prohibitive when we were younger.

Both Top Notch and Trapps were always nicer, but the Stoweflake for sure was recognized locally as higher end compared to most places in town.

If we are going to ban together and buy anything it should be the Plymouth Notch ski resort so we could own our own private mountain.
