Shimano XTR Dyna-Sys FC-M980 Trail Crankset - Double

S165MM.jpg

This XTR Trail 2x10 Hollowtech II Crankset FC-M980 is different from the Race version because it doesn't use the same proprietary 88mm bolt circle, rather it has a standard 64/104mm BCD. This allows it to have a smaller ring set than what the XTR Race Double Crankset offers. And if you look closely, you'll see that it will allow the fitment of a third, large chainring if you get down the road and realize that you want a triple.
This 980 XTR Crankset is 10-speed specific, and it's different than an XTR 970 crank in a number of ways. First, it's lighter, and it's hard to beat the sinister, throwing star aesthetic when you compare it to the static-looking radial arms of the old spider. Other changes include a move back to pinch bolts for the left side crankarm to fix it to the splined Hollowtech II spindle. Gone is the threaded preload collar from the XTR 970 crank. The pinch bolt design better separates the functions for bearing preload and securing the crank.
Like the last generation XTR cranks, the FC-M980 XTR Cranks use Shimano's Hollowtech II hollow cold forging process. This makes for a crankarm assembly that's lighter and stronger than traditional solid forgings. The chainrings are shaped according to Shimano's HG-X tooth profile design. What this means is that the shifting has been optimized to work with the new HG-X 10-speed XTR chain. Please Note: In this double ring configuration, it's necessary to use the double-specific XTR front derailleur as the cage size and shape are optimized for two rings. As the crank can be retrofitted to be a triple, you'd also need to switch to a triple compatible derailleur with the chainring switch.
The XTR Trail 2x10 Hollowtech II Crankset FC-M980 comes in four crankarm lengths -- 165, 170, 175, and 180mm. It has a 38/26t chainring configuration. It comes as a complete crankset with a Shimano XTR Hollowtech II Bottom Bracket.
