Should there be a helmet law?

If you ski crash and hit your head, that's your problem, not the resorts. I don't need my hand held, we can make our own decisions and live with them.

Tree skiing def., anything else, maybe, depends on my mood and what wavelength I'm on that day....for me

Helmut law....Hell no!!! I'm all for personal choice, but anyone under a certain age should (12 or so) should dependant upon parental consent.

I just bought a Giro G10 but unfortunately I paid a lot more than that SAC deal. DAMN!!! My main reason was the tune-ups but skiing trails like Gondi line when it looks like a mirror made me think I should wear one.

That being said it should be up to the individual. If ski resorts want to require helmets then that's up to the ski resorts but it shouldn't be for the gov't to decide. How many people suffer head injuries in car accidents on the way to a ski resort? Should helmets be required in cars?

I say NO to any helmet laws at ski areas. Yes I wear a helmet.

I have seen a few posts that said helmet law for kids only. People that say this don't think this through. Ski resorts are very different than children riding bikes. Ski areas means you get on a lift. More important someone let you on the lift.

Questions:
  1. Who is going to enforce this law that kids under the age of zz must wear a helmet?
  2. Legally who would be responsible (taken to court) if an under age child was allowed to get on the chair lift when the child suffered a head injury?
  3. What documentation (birth certificate) would a child use to prove that he/she is over the minimum age for the helmet law?

Ski patrol's highest priority is administering medical care with secondary responsibility of making the mountain safe. You can't expect lift attendants making minimum wage to be responsible if an under age child is allowed to get on a chair lift without a helmet.

I have seen kids with head injuries that were sent to the ski area by their parents with a friend with orders to wear their helmet. The child left his helmet in the lodge and suffers a head injury on some feature in the terrain park. Its damn near impossible to make ONLY under age children wear their helmets.

It would be extremely costly for everyone (ticket prices) to try to enforce a child only helmet law. If your going to have a helmet law for skiing and boarding it would have to be for everyone.

You should post a poll

I personally am not in favor of one. I don't wear one myself, but do consider it every year. I don't have a compelling reason why I'm against such a law. Even if I did become a 'helmet' skier, I can guarantee you I wouldn't want to be wearing one in the spring when I'm primarily skiing at slower speeds in the bumps. I'm not saying you can't hurt your noggin' bad by taking a header in the bumps in the spring, I just would always want the option to not wear one that time of year.

The vented helmets are nice in the spring..once you start wearing one, you'll be hooked..I don't think they should be mandatory..but individual ski areas can impose their own rules if they wish...I'm not so concerned about myself but some out of control 300 pound dude in an Eagles jacket and frozen jeans..

No law. I think it's stupid not to, but it shouldn't be a law for anyone. Parents who let their kids ski or board without a helmet should just be dragged into the woods and severely beaten, no need to involve the 'law'. ;)

Is there a law in Maine that kids under 12 have to wear a helmet ? I seem to remember that Shawnee Peak had a requirement for kids to wear one

I say no to a law but think your nuts if you don't wear one. One proplem with a law is a missfitting helmet can be worse then not having one on. It would be easy to enforce. You can't get on the lift without one. You could have the lifty take a old ski pole and bang everyone on the head after he scans the ticket.

no law...we've got enough government in our lives already...and I'm a big proponent of helmet use but it should be a choice not another government mandate.
I think it was Thomas Jefferson who said "those who are willing to sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither."

some (most?) areas may require a child under the age of x to wear a helmet in order to participate in any mountain managed activity (lessons, competitions, etc) but i can't think of any areas that require all children to wear a helmet.

I say yes and no....

Yes for helmet laws if we (as a society) have to pay health care /insurance cost for those who are injured.

No for helmet laws if those who are injured pay for their own cost.

What got me to get a helmet 2-3 years ago was my Mom. She told me very bluntly that if I had a bad head injury and became a vegetable..I would never get any sex and have to move back in with my parents..I've been a happy helmet wearer ever since. In PA motoclyclists don't have to wear helmets and we make a ton of tombstones for them,,.:-(

Ben Franklin, actually.

And I say no to the question.
