I've been to these places...
They're nice.. big terrain - above treeline - tons of cruising - great snow..
It was about 20 years ago so I would ski it differently... Was a solid intermediate back then...

Been to all three. Chamonix is by far the most challanging. With 300-400 deaths per year it is extreme. This is the place for extreme skiing but little night life fo ryounger people.

Courmayer is very nice and friendly. If staying in Chamonix you can make it here for a day trip. They have buses leaving from the station each morning.

St Anton is a great place to ski and party. The skiing was great and the night life was out of control. This is the place to go if you want to have great skiing and party.

I went on a trip to Courmayer in 2000. It’s a beautiful Alpine village, but considering this was my first time in the Alps I felt cheated. The on paiste stuff was very intermediate. They do have some good off paiste like the Valley Arp which was fun to ski.

On the same trip we got to ski a day at Verbier. It was the best place I’ve ever been. I wish we could have done the whole week there.

One day we skid the Valley Blanc. You start on the Italian side (Monte Blanco) and ski down to the French side to Chamonix. So I skied Chamonix a little bit, but looking around as we were bused out I could see what a spectacular place it is.

We went to the Arlberg last year and stayed in Lech. Unfortunately I was on the pup list with a slightly fractured knee so I could only sample the skiing vicariously through my wife. Even though I couldn't ski we had a fantastic trip (wouldv'e been even better had been able to ski). Lech is very charming and I doubt you can find a bad room in the entire village. I'd stay in Oberlech if you had young children and didn't want to be concerned about traffic, Lech if you're an adult looking for quieter Apres ski and excellent dining opportunities, Zuers (above treeline and I think looks barren) if want the royal treatment in 5-star hotels, and St. Anton if you're looking for the most challenging skiing and most night life. We met some amazing people at the ice bars in the afternoons. The most challenging skiing is off-piste and should be done with a guide. There are tons and tons of pisted intermediate terrain and my wife found that some of the blues (light) could be quite steep and bumpy. Keep in mind she was only a 2nd year skier. We were talking about this the other evening and she said she wouldn't find it nearly as intimidating now. But some blues were definately solid intermediate terrain by NE standards. We went to St. Anton one day and had lunch on top of the Valluga (SP?) -- absolutely amazing views. St. Anton is connected to the Lech/Zuers network by bus -- the buses are very convenient.. Unlike many Austrian areas, the Arlberg tends to be in a snow pocket. Snow was very good when we were there. Really can't compare to any other European areas since I've not been but I know we'd love to go back. I'd add that we met a Brit who lived in Spain -- actually had dinner with him a couple of evenings. He had skied at many of the name European areas like St. Moritz, Klosters, Zermatt and he liked the Arlberg the best.

Went to Zermatt in May 2002...skied on the Glacier from Klein Matterhorn Station...the highest in Europe. For that late in the season, the skiing was good...btw...they ski most of the year as it is. They were installing a new gondola at the bottom when I was there. The scenery was incredible.

Hey I've seen that view of the Matterhorn too!

Last year did a day in Chamonix and a week in Zermatt. Several of us hired a Swiss Mtn guide for a day and skied off piste on the Gornegaut Glacier all day. We ended up skiing and rapelling   it was awesome.!!! The guide took us to a really cool ice cave too, at the confluence of two glaciers. We skied some gnarly stuff!!!

also have been to Cervinia and Three Vallees

Am heading back to Chamonix in two weeks for a 10 day trip, including the Vallee Blanche and part of the Haute Route :D :D :D

Yippeeee!

skiied:

Courchevel
Meribel
Val Thorens

These are all in the Les Trois Vallee system. I lodged at Courchevel 1850. One day I decided to go from far left of the system and come back home. I left 9AM in the morning. None stop skiing except for a lunch(1 hour), gazing at the Mont Blanc for (15 min) and a beer stop(30 min). I got back to the lodge at 4:30.

Val Thorens is sick.......

I go to Val Gardena since several years! It's great! Ilove the Sellaronda in the Dolomiti superski ski resort!

Welcome to the forum. If anyone here has skied Italy I'd be slightly surprised. I just checked out a trail map and it looks like some wild terrain though!
