Took a trip to Santa Fe with my wife and some non-skiing friends and awas able to catch a day at Ski Santa Fe. Sure it's not Taos but it wasn't bad.

Weather was in the mid forties/sunny in the city but 15 miles away (and one mile higher up) we had some nice snow showers. Millenium chair to the chutes was on windhold all day. But summit access could be gained via the Roadrunner triple. Only problem was that a cloud settled on top of the summit (12000 feet) and we couldn't see 50 ft in front of us with the cloud and blowing snow.

Conditions were more accomodating off of the Super Chief Quad which was below the cloud line (11075 ft) so we took advantage of what was there. Not a huge number of runs on this part of the mountain but enough to keep us busy for the day. Liked Muerte to Sugar Bowl the best but Midlands was nice also. The trails were pretty much straight and a few of them had extended flat runouts.

All in all it was a great day. And there aren't a lot of places were you can play a comfortable sunny 18 holes on Sunday and have a great ski day on Tuesday within a 15 mile radius. To say nothing of the great places to eat and visit.

We did take a ride up to Taos to sightsee (I tried not to whine about not skiing). The country side was spectacular, the city of Taos -- meh, especially in comparson to Santa Fe. I know its a lot smaller than SF but I've been in a bunch of small western ski towns (Whitefish, MT, Sandpoint ID, Durango, CO) I like a lot better.

Have skied at Santa Fe twice - 15 years ago and just last year for 1/2 day on our way up to Taos. Actually, my only western skiing has been done at those two areas! Off the top, there is some great terrain in the woods. 15 years ago, it was a snowy/low visibility day and I could have skied off a cliff without realizing it!

My impression of Santa Fe is that most people aren't even aware there's a ski area in close proximity. Even Taos is not really a ski town like Colorado/Park City/Truckee, etc.

Food is awesome and the light in NM is special. I posted some pictures from last year on my gallery - two are from Santa Fe.
