Ski Area: Snowbird
Dates: December 16, 2012
Conditions: 45" base, Knee deep pow on a firm base.
Weather: Dumping. Between Friday, 12/14 and Wednesday 12/19 we got about 50-60" of snow.
Report No: 5
The pow was sublime, but the visibility was subprime. Caught a ride up with Andy, one of our friends, and he got his first taste of Utah Monster Powder. We headed straight for Mineral Basin via the new Little Cloud HSQ, which is a sweet ride. Dropped into Road to Paradise and about 2/3 the way to the corner we ran into some really deep snow that had drifted over the cat track, so we dropped in around White Diamonds. It was deep....real deap....knee deep in many places and very light. On a snowboard it was tough for Andy because of the low light and the runouts/uphill areas on Lower Powder Paradise. But no complaints for me. It was money.
Back up Mineral Basin Express and right back down the same thing. This time I was much better on my feet and got a good rhythm going. I also let the skis float and trusted that there would be no iciness underneath to snag me. It was sublime, but the blowing snow and low light made it tough going even with the right lenses on.
Back up top we decided to drop into Little Cloud for a couple and did two spins down Mark Malu that proved to be equally tasty for me. The new lift is a breeze making for some very nice quick runs on one of my favorite parts of the resort. The second one we were almost blown off the mountain by the high winds, so we decided to head to Mid-Gad to warm up.
We did a couple quick spins down Gad II, which was also debuting for the season, and had some tasty treats on the side of Bananas. The soft bumps were nice and the trees kept the wind out. We took one more spin down Election to Tram Base to meet up with some other folks for a beer.
Pics coming soon, but I did not take many because it was just a White Room kind of day.
