Skied Saturday at Stowe under warm and sunny skies. My son and I were riding the gondola at 9:30 and finished up there shortly after 4PM. What a great day of skiing with soft corn snow. The lines for the fourrunner quad were really long so we switched over to the old double. Essentially, skied National, Goat, Liftline, Lookout, Starr, Hayride and 2 runs over on Chin Clip all day. Skied abit of the Nosedive glade and a glade run lower down Nosedive on the right too which weren't bad but not worth going back.

Three years ago we made this trip on the first or second weekend of April and I had to talk my son down Liftline. This time my son was giving me advice to relax and just ski (stop thinking) because the bumps had me all in fouled up! There is good amount of snow on the top of the mountain and the trails were very bumped up. Great mountain but $89 or $84 for a lift ticket is pretty steep.

On Sunday, we skied at MRG. It rained most of the time we were there (until 2PM), heavily at times. This was my son's first visit and I regret the weather was so bad - it was really blowing on the top and the snow really never softened up. The snow at the bottom of the mountain is almost completely gone but deep above the mid-station. We skied Upper Antelope, Catamount, Upper Canyon, Beaver, Fall Line and Upper Glade together at which time my son called it a day due to the weather. I proceeded to ski Catamount and Lower Antelope and Chute before calling it a day. I was completely soaked down to my t-shirt at the end!

Saturday, I was really happy with my skiing. My son gave me his "just ski Dad" advice early in the day while on Goat and I did and from there on out, my bump skiing was the best since coming out of retirement 7 years ago. I was able to keep the skis in contact with snow, absorb, extend, pole plant, et cetera all really comfortably. I took a straight line down the slope and felt comfortable, confident and in control.

Sunday, a different story. My introduction to MRG was three years ago - http://forums.alpinezone.com/14020-mrg-2-19-07-a.html Conditions were different this time obviously but this place again made me feel small. Chute just mauled me - big bumps and a fall line above a certain steepness and I turn to mush. Catamount's deep troughs and irregular lines just owned me. I was humbled. One of the things I did Saturday was keep my vision extended further down the hill and that really helped - advice from someone who attended the mogul clinic at sundown. When the slope gets steep, I can't shed speed then lean back, ski off my heels, get unbalanced, can't plant my pole, ski across the slope rather than down it - very frustrating. Next season, I'm going to MRG for 2 or 3 days, get myself lessons each day and break the code!

My son is a different story. He's been skiing faster than me for awhile but he's now looking more comfortable in the bumps. Saturday from the top of Starr, he looked down and said, "Wow, this is really steep." and then proceeded to ski down without pause! Next season, I hope he'll still ski with me!

Ski clubs are always an option too. I paid $48 for my ticket to Stowe this year through my club. Mad River was $28 through the club too.

Stowe was awesome on Saturday. The quad was busy, but only took about 10 mins on average. Starr was in perhaps the best shape I've ever skied it, until the grass and mud prevalent right around where it levels out. With the VT travel club card, it was $40 for the day. Two-day is $67.
