Got this idea from K-zone...

Have you ever straightlined a trail? What happened?

I straightlined Smith Walton at Wachusett right after grooming. I caught an edge halfway down lower and took a major-league yardsale. I straightline 10th Mountain and Challenger there all the time.

I've also straightlined Cataract at Sunapee, Spring Fling at Sugarbush (woah), Tuckered Out at Okemo, Exhibition at Okemo, Mine Shaft at Mt. Snow, and Coolidge Street at Loon.

Straightening a Trail

Zand what's the point? Reaching terminal velocity is only a very minor part of skiing. I certainly hope you achieved you "straightline" goals on totally empty trails.

I never really saw the point myself. I hate it when I see kids "straightlining" down a crowded trail, too dangerous. Besides anyone can go straight down a trail, that takes no skill just guts. I'd rather work on improving my technique...

As the AZ General Counsel (according to ChileMass), I'd advise one not to straightline on any trails.

That said, I'm not really a fan of it...control freak here admittedly.

I have a modest amount of skill but no guts...turns are needed to keep my speed (and sanity) in check.

I almost have to straightline it when skiing with Charlie just to keep up... ;)

Seriously though, I did some high-speed arcs at Loon last week, some of which got me going at a pretty good clip. I mostly ski slowly though with a lot of short snappy turns.

Only ever intentionally straightlined the race trail at Gunstock. At night. With no one else on it.
My wife and I were arguing about whether her skis were faster than mine, since I can never keep up with her, so we lined it out. We were neck and neck almost all the way. Which proved her skis are faster, though she won't believe the logic. I have 5cm and about 50 pounds on her. No way, on the same skis, she should be able to beat or tie me straight down.

What's the difference between a Ranger and Patrol?

Patrollers are the first aid guys, make all the calls on what to do and do all the hard stuff...

Rangers are there to help as needed - direct traffic... stuff like that...

I've straight lined stuff before - but never in bounds..
Nothing like kicking back at the top of a big bowl out west and just dropping the mo-fo...

I like tight turns straight down the fall-line trying to maintain the same speed. I get scared when people go to fast without turning, don't see the sense.

Yes it is....but you should be able to stop on a dime or at least avoid object(people).

I like the ones that ski straight down the middle with their feet 2 feet aaprt with the arms straight out from their sides...now that's control

learn to turn... :flame:

  :D

in all seriousness, besides straightlining not seeming to be fun, it would extremely dangerous with other skiers on the trail. not even racers straight line anything, racing is all about turning (albeit at high speeds).

if you want to straight line, straight line this:
