Ive always found my car far superior to a tent. Parking lot sounds just fine by my philosophies. make sure you have plenty of gas so you can start it up every few hours to heat it up.

Engine block soup is also great!!!

thanks, i'll give them a call tomorrow. is there any state forest land where i might be able to camp for free (can you tell i'm super cheap?). i think i'd prefer a warm sleeping bag in a tent rather than a cramped back seat of my car. and i don't think this is much more hard-core than staying at the pines motel or peppins at jay (anyone who's been there knows what i mean :) )

Stowe MR is in Mt Mansfield State Forest but it is only really accessible in the winter from the western side. You would have to hike up to the forest via Rt 108, not reccommended. Anyway here's the number, can't hurt to call them. 802-241-3664(Vermont Dept of Forests).

Green Mountain NF is alittle south and as far as I know you could drive up a dirt road in the NF and pitch a tent. Their number is 802-747-6700. Good luck!

here's what i'd do-

I'd park my car at the end of the plowed road at Stowe (rt 108) and huff it up 108 towards the notch and look for the little picnic area on the right. Its about 1/2 - 3/4 mile up from the Stowe base and camp there. No one should bug you about that.

I got the student pass which made it just reasonably affordable for me. the last three years I got the $200 Jay pass, but decided this would be my last chance to ski stowe for a while, so I spent the extra bucks.

thanks for all the tips. it should be an interesting night.
