Interesting article in the Boston Globe today about your list of 10 "desert island" CDs - in other words, your top 10 music CDs/albums of all time that you would need if sentenced to be stranded on a desert island.

6 - Grateful Dead: Live/Dead
7 - The Who: Quadrophenia

If given the choice of one album, it's Europe '72.

Marshall Crenshaw - Marshall Crenshaw

Max - you're a man after my own heart. I saw Asleep at the Wheel and Commander Cody (separately) at JB Scott's in Albany about 25 years ago, and they were the 2 best club shows I ever saw in my life. We sweated thru our clothes doing the Texas 2-step. Too much fun.......

Oh yeah, I've never seen Asleep At The Wheel live (only on TV), but Ray Benson is a great guitarist, has a fantastic voice, and really can whip up a crowd!

I worked with a guy who was actually at the Armadillo World Headquarters for the Commander Cody concert, said it was a great experience. Too bad they tore the place down, I believe it's now the location of a shopping mall. :(

In Cody's words..."There ain't no thing as havin' too much fun!" :D

Max - the Commander lives down outside of Woodstock, NY and one of his guitar players (John Tichy, I believe) is from Troy, so they play Albany all the time. I saw AATW twice and the Commander 3 times over the years, and they were always just out of control. I saw the Commander, NRBQ and George Thorogood at RPI a million years ago and it was a $1.00 Bud blast. I'm surprised we made it home. You can't have that kind of fun anymore.....

So far rivercOil is the only member who's list I can somewhat identify with, simply because he chose Depeche Mode - Violator.

Here's my list (and this is really fun to think about):

Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas (1990)
The Sundays - Reading Writing & Arithmetic (1990)
The KLF - The White Room (1992)
New Order - Technique (1989)
The Cure - Disintegration (1989)
Ivy - Long Distance (2001)
Duran Duran - Greatest (2005)
Beres Hammond - Love from a Distance (1996)
Depeche Mode - Black Celebration (1990)
Boston - Third Stage (1986)

hey, i got some new CD's and im only 16, just seem to like some older music. This has to be one of the most fun posts ive seen, very fun thinking of ur favorate cds... now only if i could have an i-pod on the island...
oh ya does anyone else agree that almost everything that came out since 2000 has been crap, i thought 90's were awsome for rock, but this decade doesnt seem like it is going to well for music

violator isn't exactly new :) but i do see a lot of "classic rock" tunes in the lists. not a lot of newer music from most folks though! i couldn't get into black celebration like violator for some reason. the title track is really good, plus maybe one more i like. new order - substance almost made the list. that's good for long ski trips.

I don't agree. And I think this is really dependant on what you consider "rock." How wide or narrow is your definition of rock? For example, I love the Killers.

I hated rock in the 90s after 1992, when Nirvana and the Seattle scene pushed out the music I loved earlier in the decard like Ride, Charlitans, Stone Rodes, the Farm, Primal Scream, and the other English bands like them.

Steve, I like Black Celebration because it has more Martin Gore-sung tracks than any other Depeche Mode album. He's my favorite voice in the group, and I generally like his Depeche Mode originals more than the covers on his solo albums.

I really love Violator too. When it came out, I used to listen to it in my car whenever I'd go out to a dance club. I love the dance hits like "Enjoy the Silence" and "World in My Eyes," plus the slower, more sensitive songs like "Waiting For The Night" and "Blue Dress." I used to LOVE singing harmony along with Depeche Mode music.

Last month I bought a number of their CDs to bring my collection more up to date--Violator, Music for the Masses, and Some Great Reward. I dropped off as a current fan when they went rock and added more guitars. But I've recently learned that Martin sings some great songs on the later albums so I'll be buying those as my funds allow. OK I'll let the cat out of the bag, my goal is to have all their music and then compile a great Martin Gore mix.
