There are about 100 or so depending on how you count them. A lot of buy outs. Butt, the name is retained for obvious reasons. Part of what you're buying is the name.

Says something about a) the age of lifts in the US compared to Europe and b) the consolidation of the lift industry in the US that only two of these are major manufacturers in North America and I can only recognize four of the brands on this list.

Unless you are a total lift geek, how on earth would you know which is better? I have been riding lifts for the better part of 45 years and I pay zero attention to what the lift make and models are that I ride. I bet 99% of people are the same way.
The one's that get you where you need to go. Without problems and severed limbs. Meow

Lifts are a commodity, I agree. They are all the same in that they get you up a hill. The difference is, like everything else some build better lifts than others. Even if you have the best lift and components if you have a crew installing them who "just throws them in" you will have junk...

Love to watch the guys at Sunday River, they are as good as it gets. I don't recall any serious failure. They work on them ALL year long. Plus, they have a great sense of humor. "How about if we just catapult you up there".

I'm a self-avowed lift geek and I know nothing about those brands outside of Doppelmayr and HTI (Leitner-Poma in the US). I'm assuming it's only current lift brands, with many of them Europe/Asia only. As a northeast skier, probably 50% of the lifts you ride were built by companies either defunct or not producing lifts anymore.

I guess certain brands could be better than others due to reliability and comfort, although I can't comment meaningfully on the former since I'm not a lift mechanic and the latter can be complicated. Beyond that you have superficial factors like design and appearance. Again though, superficial. If it gets me up the mountain I'm fine with it.
