Nothing like starting my St Patty’s Day celebrations a wee bit early by enjoying a hefty flagon of Celtic American punk at a rowdy Dropkick Murphys show at Terminal 5 last night. It was rock as contact sport- complete with inebriated patrons, mosh pits, flying beer cups, fans singing lead with the band, and of course, crowd surfing- even a guy in a wheelchair got hoisted up for a ride. It was a hooligan’s heaven.
After a beautiful but somber pre-recorded intro of a woman singing a Celtic song, a live bagpiper started up Cadence To Arms, the band came out and revved up the riotous, adoring crowd, breaking into The Boys Are Back. They proceeded to play for an hour and three quarters highlighting songs from their new album, including Rose Tattoo, Prisoner’s Song, The Battle Rages On, Jimmy Collins’ Wake, and sprinkling in faves like The Irish Rover, I’m Shipping Up To Boston, Fields Of Athenry, Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye, Vengeance, and Forever. All the while I was resisting getting swallowed up in the shifting tides of energetic groundlings by holding on to an I-beam supporting the upper tiers where the “VIPs” rained beer down upon us.
For the encore all the ladies were invited onstage to join them singing Kiss Me I’m Sh*tfaced. A rousing cover version of TNT got abruptly cut off when Ken Casey said a “Nazi” was being escorted offstage. “Did you see that?! There’s no room for Nazis at a Dropkick Murhys show!” he declared, as the band burst into Skinhead On The MBTA. They wrapped up this satisfying, uproarious affair with CIA. The girls were still onstage, so I’m guessing they continued the party backstage with the band. The life of Riley!
If you’re interested, they’ll be appearing in Massachusetts for three nights starting tomorrow. If you go, bring your helmet!
Let's get this party started

Encore with the ladies
