This is the first time I've ever read his name in a sentence with the word steriod in it. I guess it is an unfortunate sign of the times we live in that a successful athlete automatically draws suspicion of steriod use. I think Bode is as clean as fresh snow.

Re: Bode Miller, The Man

Bode Miller, USA, appears to be the best thing that ever happened to USA skiing. The man is just plain amazing. But if it's too good to be true, is it too good to be true? There have been some other skiers from other countries that have tested dirty for performance enhancing drugs as of late. Does Bode have us convinced? Is just a superman? Or does the group think Bode had some help?

No way to tell for sure, even with testing, but I have to assume he's being tested regularly as all Olympic caliber athletes are.

I think Phil and Steve Mahre, Bill Johnson, Tommy Moe, Picabo Street, and a host of others might have something to say about Miller being the best thing ever to happen to the US ski team.

There is a steroids feature on 60 Minutes this Sunday. They are rushing it to air because Jose Canseco's book, "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits and How Baseball Got Big" comes out the 14th.

Not to say anything bad about Bode. He's incredible to watch. Just wondering what other people think.

I find it sad you would even start a thread that tied his name to riods.

Good. I am actually glad you feel sad. All the more reason to exercise our 1st Amendment rights. One would have to be incredibly naive to think that today's and superathletes, as well as those from the 80's and 90's at one point in their career didn't put on 25 pounds of muscle over a summer.

So, good luck with you sadness. Hope you feel better. :p

It is a sad comment on the world that we all naturaly question even our "heroes." They should be held to a high standard, not only froma competitive fairness view, but also morally. The real sadness comes from the fact that so often they fail.
There are some good ones out there-Bode, Lance Armstrong, and the like, but even they have to meet the standards. It's sad that we doubt everyoe, but the honor must be honestly won.
On that note, I don't think Bode Miller is on the juice, and he's innocent until proven guilty. At least, in this country he is. Theoretically.

I don't think speaking of our heros in the same sentences with performance enhancing drugs is sad. A 19 year old kid coming home from Iraq in a body-bag is truely sad. There is nothing wrong with a little stimulating conversation on the topic of steroids and alpine skiing. Not trying to drag Bode through the mud. His millions are still pouring in.

There has been very few confirmed cases of PED's in Alpine. The ones who do, use nandrolone. Like Austria's best known and most experienced alpine skier, Hans Knauss. He tested positive on blood batch A and batch B for NANDROLONE. He's somebody's hero too.

Nordic skiing is polluted with PED's. After Salt Lake, the Oympic Village cleaning company found complete blood-doping kits -- needles, transfusion bags, tubes in the Austrian's Nordic skiers housing. Are the Austrian's the one to beat in Alpine too?

Different kind of sad, different kind of hero worship.

Absolutely.

It's a shame...

It's a shame we've got to even consider discussions like this. But I guess, in the quest to be the best, many will cheat.

I just think the thread would have been better had it just been a general question like, "What alpine skiers do you think are on the juice?" This thread does single Bode Miller out and, to my knowledge, he's never been accused of such a thing. Not that he does or doesn't do it but I could understand you asking whether you think Barry Bonds is on the juice since so many people think he is on the juice.

Although I understand your line of questioning it just sounds too much like pointing the finger at Bode on this issue.

If the NYT ran this poll, yeah, it'd be journalistic muckraking. Here, though, it's a topic of discussion.
I don't think he uses steroids, though. Doing stuff like the one-ski trick shows he's out having fun as much as anything else, and is winning because of it. If he were roid-serious, I don't think he'd be as much fun to watch.
