Tuxedo Ridge will not open for the 2015-2016 season. The closure was prompted by legal issues surrounding the property, which was once the site of the proposed Sterling Forest Resort casino. Though the state Gaming Commission did not pick Genting Americas to build a casino, the company continued to have an option on the site long enough that it did not leave Tuxedo Ridge enough time to prepare for the 2015-2016 ski season.

Its kind of sad. The place was a 50 minute drive from Manhattan and I took my 3 year old son there a couple of times last season to teach him to ski. Was really looking forward to being able to ski with him there this year. Nearby Mount Peter will probably get more business as a result of the closure.

Last season they only ran 2 of the 4 lifts they had. The terrain park "Bowl" was closed all season. The story I heard was that the lifts failed inspection and they didnt have enough money to get them repaired. Its a real shame. Sterling Forest Ski area is so close to NYC that it really is a great place to learn to ski. I really hope they can get things right and come back next year.

We skied both of them multiple times last year. Campgaw is a little closer than Mount Peter (45 minute drive vs 1hr) but can be a lot more expensive. Campgaw doesnt offer discounted children's tickets while at Mount Peter kids under 5 ski free and seniors over 70 ski free. So if I go on a weekend to Mount Peter with my soon to be 4 year old son and his over 70 grandfather and all 3 of us can ski for $49 (the cost of my 1 adult lift ticket) while at Campgaw it would cost $89 ($32 a piece for me and my son and $25 discounted senior ticket for my father-in-law). Last year I even had $10 off coupons for Peter so it was costing me even less. Also Campgaw can get quite crowed on the weekends. But if you are going midweek Campgaw is usually empty and totally worth the extra $15.

Sad news. The lift situation seemed pretty grim when I was there maybe two years ago. Quite a few chairs on the main lift were roped off for repairs and I cannot recall that last time that the Bowl chair spun. I hope things work out for them. I grew up about 15 minutes from Campgaw and have fond memories of skiing there after school when a twilight ticket ran about $7. These little areas are so important for the growth of the sport. Hopefully Mt. Peter will see some benefit. I skied there last season after they let one of their trails bump up. Would have skied there more if they hadn't groomed it shortly thereafter.

I'm sure Mt. Peter will see a benefit, though may be overrun. It's a well run operation but has limits to what it can handle. I used to go to both depending on my mood, but the lack of choice means more trips North to Bell...not a bad thing I suppose, just a lot further!

It's always a bummer when a ski area announces that it is not opening. Hope that they make it for 2016-2017.

The Ski Area at West Point is suppose to be open to the Public Mon - Fri, 3-9pm this year. I think it's 4-500 ft vert. and not highly used. The Public's money will help. The Military pays different rates for their Pay Grade. http://www.westpointmwr.com/ski/

It used to be open to the public when I was a kid. I think it would be a win win for everyone. Not a bad little hill for the area.

About 20 years ago I pulled into the Parking Lot to check it out and was surrounded by Green and ask to leave. It was Fall at the time and not in operation. Cadets probably don't get a lot of time off during the week.
