Boy, this seems like they are asking for trouble. I enjoy hiking at some resorts in the summer and offseason, but my attitude about earning turns at a resort when they are getting ready to open is mixed. Out here we have avalanche concerns. All resorts have active equipment and operations out there that can be dangerous. Winch cables on groomers, high pressure snowmaking lines, snowmobiles, and other things can be hazards. Their third tip seems dumb. Thoughts?

What trouble do you think UN is asking for? (assuming they are the "they" you refer to).

I've heard from some people that the best time to ski MRG is before it opens for the season because of the lack of moguls. Personally, I like moguls, but I could see how having it be bump free would be an interesting experience.

I guess it really depends on the ski area. I'm too lazy to hike for turns outside of small side country stuff peak season like the Chin at Stowe.

Someone who reads this and says, "gee, I think I'm going to go for a run" and gets hurt or killed. Or the resorts who now will have to be on guard for folks reading this and going (I may be giving UN too much credit though as to how many readers it has).

I also note that UN no longer allows folks to comment on articles.

no you are correct this is an irresponsible article. it mentions nothing about the safety aspect of it. Also in almost all cases it can be considered trespassing, regardless if its on USFS or State lands. The resorts have a lease that probably allows them to press charges for trespassing.

Technically a resort that leases USFS is the tenant and can control access. It's no different than someone renting a house and being able to say who can come into it or sit in the living room. And, unfortunately, if someone gets hurt than the resort could be on the hook.

I guess I would consider injury to be the personal responsibility of the person doing the act, not on some internet site for writing a short blurb. I don't see UN asking for or getting any"trouble" from writing this. People skiing when on closed resorts should certainly expect some trouble.

One would think that this would be the case, but......

With this litigious society, I'm surprised they don't have a disclaimer. I'm certain if this was "Powder Magazines" website, it would have something like this. If they even decided to have something at all.

Honestly it is a ski bum, probably in college or just out of school, that is just writing content for the site and is not really thinking of what they are saying.

good point.

That's what a lot of their content is--something quick and dirty. It's a good reason why there needs to be an editor or a gatekeeper for them because as pointed out he doesn't talk about some safety concerns at all and that would have been really easy to include.

In the shadow of the moon.
Every resort now-a-days has, or should have, an uphill policy that spells out when and if, and where skinning up is allowed. That policy should encompass dates when it is permissible.

If people don't obey the rules and regulations of the particular resort they are using for pre-season turns, then they get what they deserve.
