I have seen a few post on a couple of web sites that Wachsett may be closing down the Ski Watch. I post said that they would ski there, but operate out of their car and not go in the lodge for any other services. I think that would be a huge mistake. Can anyone add some insight to this.

That's what I've heard, but they haven't figured out what they'll replace it with so it's still there for now.

I'd be perfectly happy to pay $2-3 a night to be able to check my skis in and out of the current ski check area. Way better than any of the locking racks or whatever they are talking about.

key racks

they are replacing the ski watch with a self serve key type system. It will not be free any longer. I saw them being assembled last night. Tons of them were being unloaded.

Jeez, that was the only really nice thing they had at Wa. Way to go Wachusett. What, you're not making enough money already? I find that hard to believe.

Ok, I'll have to check this out but on first glance, I'd think twice about skiing Wachusett now as the free ski watch was one of my main reasons for going there. Knowing that theft is a problem at Wachusett, the ski watch gave me peace of mind that our equipment was safe.

Don't know what the deal is with these key system racks but why couldn't they just charge a few bucks like some other areas do for their ski watch?

I've tried virtually every kind of lock method at one point or another. Regarding lock system racks: You buy a little key lock mechanism at their ski shop, take it out side, put your skis in the rack, move the horizontal bar, insert the lock mechanism, turn it locked and take the key. I have one, it's yours to keep after the purchase. Applies to all resorts. Problem is, they never caught on, but are often still out there.

My best solution is a small recoil-able cable lock. Just make sure you attach it to something immovable. You have only to protect from the grab-and-run types, not the guy with a bolt-cutter (not happening). Never at a problem at any of the ski-theft-capital-of-the-east areas yet.

The biggest problem I have is staying too late apres-ski, and finding the grooming crew picking up the rack to move it, with my skis attached!

I agree, an area like Wawa needs the ski check. Guess some MBA-types figured they were not making enough money on it...

go to the wachusett blog and comment on this. this is ridiculous.

I always check my gear and tip a buck whenever I go in the lodge. I will no longer patronize the ski shop, bar, or restaurant if this comes to fruition.

hmm. I too sent an email to the information@ address and no bounce yet.

I basically said kiss my hundreds of dollars of annual food/bev/misc apparel n gear spending goodbye and that I'd encourage others to do the same

Mount Snow brought in an outside vendor last season to run their main base area ski check services, not free, but IMHO, very reasonable. During the day, it's $1 per time for the ski check (a full season pass of daytime costs $25), they also offer overnight service for $4 a night ($90 for a season pass). All rates are per 1 pair of skis, and they're there every day the mountain is open. A fair, reasonable service.

As Billski said too, a cheap, retractable pocket sized cable lock attched to a fixed rack of some sort, works wonders, and will keep your EXPENSIVE gear safe from the abundant unlocked EXPENSIVE options that many a "grab and run" a$$ hole has as an option in just about every base area rack out there :smash: :uzi:  :uzi: :smash:

I e-mailed mgt and included a link to this thread.

I'm getting unfavorable feedback from my group members and race team members.

I used to develop a rapport with the people @ Ski Watch. I'd drop off and pick up a few times each day I went...and drop $5 in the tip-boot when I was done. Well worth it!

I've had a couple of those cable locks. Every one fails. I end up with a long dangle of cable...awesome.

But if this lockable rack thing works...meh. One more thing to keep in my boot bag...and NOT lose.

Surprised at the response here (then again you skiers are pretty uptight :flame:). Such a low thing on my list that it really doesn't bother me. A nice feature to have sure, but one that sways my opinion to go or not go there, no way.

Have you ever had your equipment stolen?

They watch snowboards too. :uzi:

It's convenient and it's safe. I can drop my skis off and go hit the bar and be sure they will be there when I leave. It's also something that had been heavily advertised in the past, so dropping it (although it doesn't sound like that's the case now) would be a pretty big negative at this point.

I have not Bill, but if I had I wouldn't be that aggrieved if it went from free to costing some amount. Like I said, I can not imagine refusing to go to a resort based on that. Other things are of much higher importance to me, and I'm surprised this is a major issue to many.
