I am looking at a Garmin 255w for the wife for Xmas. It has the wider screen (4.3" vs 3.5") so it's easier to see. It has lots of basic and a few advanced features and lots of waypoints. Looks like the best value in the basic range. My local BJ's Wholesale has it for $139, which looks pretty good.

Anyone got any better suggestions in the $125-175 range?

Last - do you need to sign up for a subscription to get map updates? How does this work? Are there models where you get the subscription for free? The literature is confusing.

Thanks - CM

That's a good model and price. You're first map update is typically free, but for a limited time. I suggest that you connect and update as soon as you get the GPS as they are typically out of date when you buy them. After that you can buy updates as needed or I believe you can subscribe, your choice.

Pretty sure that's the model I have. Good no frills, easy enough interface. Not sure if traffic updates are important for you, I think some of the higher end models may have free traffic subscriptions.

First update was free, add'l will cost. Some models may have lifetime subscrptions, free traffic (rather than subscitpion, etc).

I've got the Nuvi 265WT and my wife has the 285WT. We both like these units. Both are just like the 255W except the 255W doesn't have bluetooth or traffic. I find that the traffic function is not very helpfull in rural CT but I use the Bluetooth function every day for my hands free phone.
If you don't need bluetooth I'd say go for it. If you do need bluetooth the 265WT can be had for about $20-30 more and you'll also get lifetime traffic.
If you do get it be sure to download the latest Maps and software which will be free if done within the first 60days of ownership. After this updates are $60.00 for a one time update or $119.00 for the lifetime of the unit.
ps There are websites with info on how to update free. :)
