whistler blackcomb gondola tower collapse

The upper stage of the gondola has reopened. They've off loaded all the cars from the lower line and the folks from Dopplymayr are working to get the tower repaired ASAP, and it could be repaired and back running again by the 1st of the year apparently.

All info came from a post on a skilift site from a W/B lift mechanic

Whistler had a chairlift fail in Dec., 1995

2 died when their chair was let loose from the cable & they fell 40 ft....
not a good day for Whistler - detachable chair had been making bad noises & they kept running it...

Apparently Yan detachables had grip problems and a chair ahead slipped down the cable into other chairs and four fell off the haul rope.
