Just thought you'd all want to know. Avy danger still high though so you'll need a beacon and a shovel before they'll let you in. That brings wf's already unsurpassed (on east coast) vert to 3400' feet and gives you the only true lift served backcountry this side of the mississippi. 9 more inches last night and 17" over the last 3 days. More snow tomorrow and tomorrow night. But have fun at Okemo (just kidding).

Some better ski the slides and post a trip report with pictures

I'm totally shocked that the slides are open. I was convinced that they never open. Everytime I look over from the summit quad I think you would need ice skates to ski the slides. I want to hear what they are like when they are actually open.

Is the backcountry skiing off of the lifts of Wildcat and Cannon in NH and Jay Peak, VT not true 'back country'?

It is very cool that the slides are open! Rip it up!

yeah p'rolly. Didn't mean to offend. But if you've gotta hitchhike, or just hoof it, back to the area, or leave a drop car then...well it's still "lift served bc" but it's not what I meant.

mansfield and smuggs also have an amazing amount of lift serviced BC. to suggest WF is the only lift serviced back country on the east coast is very inaccurate. though the need for a prob and beacon is pretty unique on the east coast for lift serviced. there are spots on mansfield that could qualify though.

I was talking to a guy in a bar on Tuesday and he told me that he just got back from Iceface and said the conditions were awful. I didn't know the guy, but with the latest conditions I'm very suprised by this.

Suprised by what?
Since Monday there has been plenty of snowfall. Plus, the upper mountain has a decent base.

The bad conditions were the result of a thaw and rain followed by a rapid freeze and extremely high winds. Add crowded slopes to the mix due to the holiday weekend and the olympics and you have a recipe for crap skiing. That wasn't unique to Whiteface.

   :lol:no quicker way to ID yourself as a total poser than complain about conditions at Whiteface. I've NEVER met a good skier who didn't love that place. Ever.

Gee, here's a newsflash: After temps shot up to 50 degrees with torrential rains followed by 80mph winds and an arctic blast the skiing surfaces were not too good. Who woulda thunk it?

Seriously, Whiteface is not a problem conditions wise anymore. Whiteface was worlds better than the crap NH/ Maine has been dealing with all season. And to think that conditions would be good after rain, wind, and a 50 degree temp swing in 12 hours? Laughable.

I second WIlly's statement. Ive also never heard a competent skier or boarder complain about Whiteface,

I feel that way about a few mountains... Nothing gives a mountain a bad name quicker than a whiney intermediate that has to negotiate some ice on a high traffic trail...
