I will be honest: from my experience, outsourcing 3D model game assets is one of the smartest ways to speed up production. This is done without overloading the internal team. Creating detailed assets in-house takes a lot more time than most people expect. So having specialized artists handle that part frees everyone else.
The turnaround time is usually much faster. To top it all, with the right communication setup, it barely feels like the work is happening externally.
My biggest success this year came from outsourcing a batch of complex character models, which helped us avoid a major bottleneck. The biggest failure was not giving the external team a clear style guide at the beginning. That caused a few rounds of revisions, but once we set proper guidelines, the workflow became way more efficient.
