Zipp Speed Weaponry 1080 Front Wheel - Tubular
For road racing and triathletes alike, the Zipp 1080 Carbon Tubular Front Wheel is the weapon of choice for the gods and goddesses of the clock. It's a purebred time-trialing hoop that's significantly faster and easier to handle than even most disc wheels. Its 108mm deep, fully toroidal profile is still much lighter than a disc wheel, making it perfectly suited for TT courses when crosswinds and hills are a potential threat - and when are they not? The toroidal profile (think of a doughnut or a rubber o-ring as a basic toroid shape) has been tested to be nearly 30 seconds faster over 40km than even a traditional tri-spoke wheel without generating any side force due to wind.
The tubular 1080 is built with Zipp's Carbon Bridge manufacturing technology. Zipp stitches Kevlar thread in a co-axial helix (think round) to bind the layers of carbon fiber at the top of each rim's sidewall. What the stitched segment does is better spread out the compressing load that the rim experiences as it nears and passes the ground. They call it a "capstone." The result is a tubular rim that is 28% more impact resistant than earlier iterations and allows Zipp to remove material from under the tire bed (hence the diet between the previous iteration and this one).
The 1080 now comes standard with Zipp's new 88/188 hub, whose beefy 17mm axles are larger in diameter than most mountain bike hubs, and their Swiss bearings are as precise as many of the ceramic "upgrades" you see in the marketplace.
The Zipp 1080 Carbon Tubular Front Wheel has 16 radial spokes. All spokes are straight-pull Sapim X-Ray with aluminum nipples. The rim width is 27.5mm. A skewer is not included.
