Running Season Is Almost Upon Us

Running is definitively therapeutic... and nothing beats it for leaning out (well, maybe swimming?). Not much feels as good as kicking your own ass after a good run. I'm trying to get back into it... without injuries this time.

Does anybody still not wear a helmet???

I think I see more out here that don't than I did back East... maybe it's the icy conditions? One of the hardest local BC hardman almost never wears one and he's on some gnarly peaks... I don't get it, but whatever - skisickness.com

    Acadia National Park Suggestions

Yes, go to Blackwoods... you are a short walk to a view of the water from the campground, you're right down the road from Bar Harbor, near Otter cliffs, near the mountains... anyway, there aren't too many camping options around Acadia anyway but Seawall is really way out in the middle of nowhere...

    Gulf of Slides 3-5-09

Nice work, dude. The GOS looks very filled... veeery filled. You guys are having a killer season up there. GOS tops at about 35-40. It's not as steep as Tux. Takes a little less time to get to the base and you can skin the whole way in. Most runouts are snow or trees.

Booting up: Parking Lot v. Lodge

I'm just not a fan of leaving stuff behind in the lodge or buying a locker... too much of a hassle in the the pre and apres. If I have to attend to business I just head in with my boots and all beeline for the stalls. Lodges, especially on weekends are just madhouses. And besides, I usually ski...

    Crystal Mountain - 2.21.09

Man, was just there today... the place is impressive and there is some sick natural terrain. Spent most of the day in the Campbell Basin with one run down Powder Bowl (fun!). Did a couple nice steep chutes off of the Throne but should've really just sucked it up and hiked the rest of the way up...

    Greylock's Thunderbolt

I skinned up the thunderbolt when I did it. Had to do a few switchbacks on the steeper parts, but it's doable.

    Crystal Mountain - 2.21.09

Nice! I've yet to go to Crystal but I'm hopefully heading there tomorrow, was just at Alpental today... winter arrived again yesterday and today... was skiing some shin deep Cascade Concrete today. Crystal got 9" in the last 48hrs and Alpental ranged from 4-12!... it was sorely needed!

    Skiing in Washington State

Pray for snow and lots of it. I was skiing at Alpental twice in the last few days.... it's still not even close to icy by Eastern standards but it's been basically a few inches over [PNW] hardpack. I was going to head to Crystal over the weekend but I'm waiting for conditions to improve to...

    Telemark Question

There are plenty of backcountry ski manufacturers who make skis that "work" for both locked heel AT and free heel tele bindings. Used to be that you'd get a tele specific ski that happened to be softer... not so much anymore. You will still find some skis that are softer and more for tele, but...

What snow conditions allow you to ski a longer day?

You know, I completely forgot about corn. I think you have a point and if you think about it it makes sense - thawed and frozen and thawed corn is generally smooth and even - so not a lot of small or big leg compressions needed for adjustments. Corn is very easy to edge since you only need a...

What snow conditions allow you to ski a longer day?

A post on the powder thread got me thinking... and questioning. Now lets assume that: -You are using the better equipment for the conditions -You are skiing said conditions in generally accepted good style and skill - sideslipping, long traverses, straight-lining, etc don't really count -Bumps...

    Powder days...are you worthy?

Of course I get that we all get old and body parts don't work like they used to, yada yada yada... But, I find that I use a lot more leg strength and also feel a lot more impact on my joints when I'm skiing through crud, groomers, bumps, etc. In non-powder I find that I have to adjust to the...
