Tesla's Model X: Finally, an electric car we all want
Tesla Motors is helping destroy the notion that electric vehicles are green cars with unfortunate compromises.
The company last night unveiled the Model X, a sleek-looking cross between a minivan and SUV with clever "falcon wing" doors and a new electric all-wheel drive system. People can start placing reservations tomorrow for the Model X, which is expected to be available late next year with prices in the $55,000 to $75,000 range before tax incentives and rebates.
Beyond making an attractive crossover, Tesla has shown how electric vehicles open up new design possibilities. The Model X isn't just an electric version of competing SUVs, it's a luxury vehicle that has useful features its internal combustion or hybrid cousins couldn't have. ***

It'll be interesting to see whether it catches on. I wonder what kind of range it has.

Interesting. My only beef with it is that if the concept behind it is so good, you would think that people would want to buy this vehicle reguardless of "tax incentives and rebates," wouldn't you?? Now you just have a situation where when a car has "tax incentives" associated with it, if you're a tax payer who DOESN'T buy one, YOU are helping subsidize the cost of someone else's car on top of paying for your own vehicle(s).

If any product has enough perceived value at the price its offered for, then let it succeed. If a product can't succeed on it's own, at the cost that it can be made for. Then either go back the the proverbial drawing board, or find a private source of capital to fund further research. If the concept is a good one, the capital more than likely will be found

Very cool. Hope this catches on and sticks.

As a taxpayer I'm personally ok with subsidizing stuff like this to an extent.

I agree with the notion that tax credits are not the way to go here. However, this is not a case of subsiding. That would imply that the tax of others goes up as the tax of the buyer goes down, which is not the case. It only creates a larger national deficit. There aren't many cars that qualify for the credit any more. Diesel and hybrids no longer get the credit, only EVs IIRC.

Show us the range and then we can talk. Otherwise, it is just a rich man's large leaf with cool doors.

If it needs incentives to sell, people don't want it in the first place.

Lots of people know that Tesla has been hard at work developing an electric SUV, known as the Model X. Tesla has just formally debuted the car, giving it a high-profile denouement. The SUV will share a ton of the same technology of the Model S sedan. Article source: Model X unveiled by Tesla. It's a great car. Glad it's finally done. Awesome!
