Can anybody explain what causes the "black gunky residue" that sticks to your ski bases at the end of the season in the warm weather? I think someone once said it might be due to some oil being pumped through the snowmaking pipes at shutdown.

What solvents would be best to use to remove this residue? Maybe mineral spirits or terpentine or some kind of degreaser?

Oil, sap, accumulated dust.

If you put on a nice layer of white wax and then scrape it off, it will take all that crap up with it.

It's a protective coating the mountain was nice enough to provide for your ski bases. It keeps them looking good over the off-season so they're ready to rock next season.
