Mavic R-Sys Clincher Wheels
There are a number of wheels available today that were considered the top dog when they were introduced six or seven years ago, but aren't much to talk about today. Wheel technology is always evolving, and in the cycling industry R & D can fall under three categories -- dormant, dead or evolving. The first two are effectively the same, and the third is where the Mavic R-Sys Wheels land. Since the introduction of the Ksyrium lineup in 1999, Mavic engineers have been constantly evolving the quiver of Ksyrium Wheels. Staying ahead of the design curve, Mavic has lived up to its iconic name by building quality, durable, high-performance wheels.
One notable aspect of the R-Sys Wheels is the rim depth. The front rim on the R-Sys is only 22mm deep, essentially the same depth as an Open Pro rim. This makes it lighter, and it has the incidental advantage of being a more stable wheel in crosswinds and at high speeds on descents. The rear rim depth on the R-Sys is 25mm. The reasoning behind this is that it gives the rear wheel added rigidity and resistance to flex, which, according to Mavic, gives it superior power transfer. The R-Sys Wheelset also features the aggressive Inter Spoke Milling (ISM) Mavic uses to trim away all the excess aluminum between the spoke threads and sidewalls. This removal of excess material shaves grams without affecting rigidity or strength.
The R-Sys hubs are machined from a single piece of aluminum and feature slightly oversized aluminum axles for increased lateral stiffness that is noticeable 10 minutes into your first ride. The hubs are also equipped with Mavic's QRM+ bearings that are double-sealed for longevity, and each hub allows for micro-fine preload adjustment.
The aesthetically appealing tubular carbon fiber TraComp spokes keep the R-Sys group distinguishable from the rest of the Mavic line. Their design is noteworthy in that they have a larger diameter, which works in both tension and compression, a quality that gives the R-Sys wheelset unmatched lateral stability. Real-world translation: you'll descend with confidence and increased speed. The front wheel uses 16 of these carbon spokes while the rear has 10 on the non-drive side. They're too large to be used on the rear drive-side; 10 bladed Zicral aluminum spokes go here instead. Using this few spokes means a very light wheel. Lighter, in fact, than many carbon-fiber wheels designed for sew-ups. The R-Sys Wheelset is lighter than many carbon wheels designed for sew-ups. However, even though the Tracomp spokes are very lightweight, they won't sacrifice stability when under load.
The R-Sys SLR Maxtal rims are wrapped with Vittoria-built, Mavic-branded PowerLink and GripLink tires. The Powerlink rear tire uses two different rubber compounds to reduce rolling resistance and increase energy transfer while still maintaining superior cornering traction. The center strip of the tread uses harder 70a rubber. This gives the Powerlink the hard wearing and fast rolling characteristics that Mavic intended. However, since safety and great performance depends on a good cornering grip, the rubber on the shoulders is a softer, far grippier, 60a durometer.
The front wheel of the R-Sys SLR comes equipped with the GripLink tire. GripLink was designed to keep your front wheel glued to the tarmac when you lay your bike into a sweeping high-speed corner. The smooth black sidewall is more than just window dressing. The tread rubber is thickest in the center, where it experiences the most wear, and thins progressively towards the bead. The result is a sidewall that protects against cuts and tears on debris-strewn roads, but isn't a rotational weight anchor.
