NEW HARTFORD, Connecticut -- Mogul skiers from all over the Northeast converged on Ski Sundown this past Sunday to participate in the "Bump or Bust III" mogul competition. The contest was the final element of a day long spring event known as "S7" (Ski Sundown's Super Stupendous Spring Sunday Spectacular) at the New Hartford ski area. Earlier in the day a slopestyle and "big air" contest were held. Event sponsors included Eastern Mountain Sports, Suburban Sports of Berlin, Nordica & Smith Optics.
Also in attendance filming segments for their next movie to be released in the fall were the crew of Meatheads Films of Burlington, Vermont, a company dedicated to creating innovative movies based exclusively in the East. Randy "The Hammer" Grasso of Fremont, New Hampshire and Meathead Films fame, was the winner of the mogul event. The Hammer was awarded a pair of Nordica skis, a check for $1,000 and a trophy known as the "Golden Dendrite," a snow gun originally developed at Ski Sundown that was painted gold for the awards ceremony.
The competition was held on the bottom half of Sundown's signature trail Gunbarrel, the steepest in the state. The mountain seeded moguls on the trail at the end of February and several new faces have been seen this spring checking out the emerging mogul scene in Connecticut. Many of the competitors, some of whom were making their first visit to Sundown, were impressed with the ski area's commitment to offering mogul skiing in Southern New England.
"I think Ski Sundown is a sick hidden gem. Love it here. I'll be back," commented The Hammer.
A total of 65 competitors, some from as far away as New Jersey and Ontario Canada entered the third "Bump or Bust" mogul competition. Spectator turnout was strong as well with an enthusiastic crowd cheering on the competitors as they crossed the finish. Ski Sundown management was extremely pleased with the interest in the event.
"The conditions and weather were perfect, the crowd was enthusiastic, and the talent level of the competitors was exceptional. It all combined to make it one of the most enjoyable competitions Sundown has had. It was very rewarding to see so many Northerners make the trek to Connecticut. The effort the staff put into creating this competition certainly paid off. It was a great day and Sundown made a lot of new friends," said Bob Switzgable, Owner of Ski Sundown.
Ski Sundown is closed through Thursday, but plans to reopen this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. For more information please see their Web site at www.skisundown.com.
