New ski insert arrived! And I will do a field test at the ski resort this weekend.

I’m nearsighted with astigmatism. Initially, I used daily disposable contact lenses, but they can’t be customized for astigmatism, so things still looked blurry. I’ve been using a ski goggle insert for almost two years now—my old one broke. (Well, I guess the quality wasn’t great; it would harden up when the temperature dropped at the ski resort, and it cost me over $100. I can’t even remember the brand. )
This year, I searched online for ages and got another customized one. (So far, it has good flexibility. This one cost around $60, and the brand is ApexSpecs. )
I’m hitting the slopes this weekend, so I’ll test this new insert in real conditions. If it works well, I’ll come back with feedback.
By the way, do any of you use this kind of ski goggle insert? Roughly how much did it cost you?
Didn’t expect so much interest in this insert! A bunch of people asked where I got it, so I edited the post and dropped the link below.
ApexSpecs ski insert
Just a heads up though—this isn’t an ad, haha, and it’s not a buying recommendation either! I haven’t actually worn it skiing on the slopes yet—only played around with it a bit since receiving it, and it feels pretty good so far.
How it performs on the slopes specifically—I’ll test it out this weekend! If it’s solid, I’ll put together a detailed review and share it with you all then.

Is yours single-vision or progressive? What's the refractive index? Mine are single-vision with a 1.67 refractive index. I noticed that lenses with different refractive indices come at different prices.
Mine were $180...SportRX

I have daily disposable contact lenses for astigmatism, Bausch & Lomb has made them for almost 10 years now. Alcon makes them too.

Next time you have an eye doctor appointment request a trial. If your astigmatism is garden variety they'll have them in stock, if you're astigmatism is bad like mine they'll have to order trial lenses, but you'll get samples in 3 or 4 days.

Yeah I use contacts for astigmatism too. Most of the time too lazy to put them on before work but when skiing I use them whenever I can. Nothing worse than glasses fogging up under your goggles, then its a never ending battle of being able to see.

I used to wear daily disposable contacts, but changing them every single day gets pretty pricey over time—it’s actually a decent chunk of change. Quick question: for those of you with astigmatism who wear custom daily disposables, how much do you typically pay per day? Thank you:)

Thanks for this. Unfortunately contacts are not possible for me and I need this. I will carry readers with me
You can have a try—it’s been pretty good so far! I’ll put it through a deep dive during my ski trip this weekend, and if it’s really solid, I might post another in-depth review later.

That’s definitely way too pricey—haha, you can check out the one I bought!

I did add the "anti-fog coating" which was an extra $60. Whether that does anything I don't know. At least SportRX is a reputable US-based company. Apex's website looks kind of sketchy. Supposedly based in the UK, yet their privacy policy refers to a company in China that handles their payment processing and also says a Chinese company is used for logistics. There were other parts of their website that really seemed questionable that it was a UK company. The hours their phone support is available also seem to align more with a company based in China.

If I was going to go with a cheaper non-US company, I would have gone with Youzee. They're based in Sweden. I just was worried about the fact that they claim their inserts fit "any goggles" meanwhile Sport RX supposedly matches the frame to your goggles for a more customized fit.

On the other end of the lens spectrum, I wear rigid gas permeable lenses and those things are durable. I’ve had my current pair for 3+ years; just had an eye exam and am seeing as well as when they were fitted. I’ve heard anecdotally that they slow changes in your vision and for me at least that’s true, I’ve had the same prescription for ~15 yrs (at a time of life when many are adding in readers). I’m super nearsighted (-8) with major astigmatism.

They take a little getting used to but once you’ve got a good fit you’re golden, and boy is it cheap keeping the same lenses for years. I have backups in case I lose one but haven’t needed them in ages.

I guess it depends partially on your insurance, but after the rebates, about $1 per day, which to me is a small price to see well. Plus I dislike wearing glasses so I only wear them at night when I remove my contacts.

Fair enough—you’ve got a point! But I didn’t overthink it that much when I bought it. Definitely need to learn from you on being cautious, haha.
Thankfully, it hasn’t been a letdown so far—the quality of what I received is pretty solid.
I plan to try buying one insert from different brands and kind of do a comparison review. Wondering if anyone here would be interested?:sneaky:

Can you share me the link?
I edited the post again and dropped the link above—feel free to check it out for reference! I haven’t actually worn it skiing yet, though; I just tried it on indoors after receiving it, and it feels pretty good so far. It’s just for reference, though!

Also, quick question—does anti-fog coating actually work? When I was at the ski resort before, I asked some seasoned ski instructors, and they more or less dismissed it as a gimmick (like a "tax on naivety," if you will).
Even my old M4 ski goggles—they were pretty expensive and came with anti-fog coating, but they fogged up like crazy. The anti-fog wipes that came with this insert are way more effective, honestly—just a quick wipe does the trick.
From my personal experience, whether it fogs up or not seems to come down to my skiing speed. It never fogs up when I’m skiing smoothly!
