Go away again. Nothing but misery for as far as the eye can see on Tomer's update today.

Snowbird reported another 7" last night (Jan 8-9).
Actually, I recently pulled the trigger on a trip to the French and Swiss Alps over the last 11 days of this month (January 2026). This was not on the radar until about a month ago and not decided until a few days ago. That should mean good snow coming to UT ;)
From what I understand it was not a great early winter in the Alps, but the areas I'm headed to are getting a good dump right now. Last time I skied the Alps was 2003.

If the trip doesn't get too hectic I'll report back here on my findings. Going to Chamonix and the Jungfrau regions.

Ski it now. I have gotten 2 powder days in the last week. Today was pretty close to having a third one...

It will be very busy this weekend.

Park City only gets maybe 60% the snow Alta/Snowbird does, so it's not looking like where you ski. It is definitely much, much better than it's been, but it's still not great. We need a few more feet. At least they were able to get Jupiter open late today (of course I was at Canyons & didnt get that rope drop), and rumor has it King Con will open this weekend, which will help tremendously as that pod is Park City's officially designated Jerry-collector.

Today was really great, it finally feels like ski season.

Several days after the storm there was tons of untouched powder in the trees-nobody-knows-about and it was lots of fun.

ROTD was oddly Pinball Alley, which is just off-trail moguls and/or trees, followed by a natural half-pipe. I would have lapped it if I could.

My little one got in trouble in the all-day ski school though because when she was the run leader she didnt stop at the designated rendezvous point and skied all the way down to the lift without the instructor. Her excuse? "I got too much fun and forgot".

good snow and small crowds.

Have crowds been nuked at Snowbird & Alta too?

This was the emptiest I've ever seen a January Saturday in Park City. It was great, but almost eerie. At 9am the line to get on the mountain at Red Pine was only 5 minutes, and OBX was literally ski on. Normally on a Jan. Sat. at 9am those lines would be like 55 minutes & 35 minutes, respectively.

The rest of the day was the same, maybe 2 or 3 minute waits at Tombstone, Peak 5, and Saddleback, with occasional "ski ons" mixed in. I knew January bookings for Park City were down considerably, but given the conditions are pretty good I was really surprised by this.

Was quiet in the East too. Historically this weekend (post New Years but before MLK Weekend) isn't busy as the sub 10 ski/ride days a year, mainly holiday weekend only folks, aren't out on the hill.

Heck at Jay Peak, where I was this weekend, the Tram was at most a 3 to 4 box wait for me this weekend, and every other chair was at most 5 minutes, and more often a minute or less

Did the conditions in the east recently deteriorate?

Because if conditions are still "best ever", and the crowds are gone, I wonder if this is a negative leading indicator for the economy.

I would say yes they got the eastern rinse and freeze cycle. I did not venture out this weekend and have read the surfaces are quite solid in most places. The bases seem to be holding up well but the surfaces need work.

Agree with Dr Jeff that this past weekend is generally a slow one compared to the most of the regular season but I’m sure the weather didn’t help. Lots of time before worrying about the economic conditions but something that bears watching

On the upside gas is down all over the northeast and there’s rumors of possible snow so this coming weekend could be a totally different story. At least there seems to be a good amount of terrain open to hopefully spread things out.

Now if the west can only get through this high pressure dome and get some storms to break through. Not panicked but would be nice to see more action out there.
