Something progressive. It can be basically anything that doesn't have a crappy verse/chorus 3x + solo at end format. It just has to be awesome. The heavier the better, but some soft stuff could be good too. Right now I'm really digging Opeth, Necrophagist, Pink Floyd, and Rush to give an idea what I like.

Hmmmm... Mahavishnu Orchestra. Electric Miles Davis could be a fun listen for you as well. Something off of Bitches Brew, perhaps.

For Prog-Rock start with the classics

Yes - The Yes Album, Fragile, Relayer, Going for the One

Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Trilogy, Tarkus, Brain Salad Surgery

King Crimson - Court of the Crimson King

Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Selling England by the Pound

And some of the later, heavier bands...

Queensryche (especially Operation:Mindcrime)

Dreamtheater

Marillion

Moe has some good stuff but their songs can drag out a bit long (airplane is 12+ minutes and really doesnt need to be).

-John Butler Trio has some really amazing stuff, a little on the softer side
-If you like just insane guitars licks check out Keller Williams

I don't know if these will meet your needs or not. As it turns out, today I received the latest copy of "Uncut", a British music magazine I subscribe to. Each month there is a sampler CD included, and this month's is called, "Fill Your Head With Prog". Bands included are The Nice, The Way We Live, Aphrodite's Child, Tractor, Wigwam, White Noise, String Driven Thing, Body, Steve Killage, Caravan, and Van der Graaf Generator.

If you'd like a copy, PM me.

Hmm... some stuff I defiantly have to check out. As for Tool, I think they are okay. I'll listen to them if they come up on the radio and I'll occasionally listen Ænima (the album). Personally I think most their music sounds very similar so it gets old quickily. As for Dreamtheater, I just can't stand the vocals, I love the music but I just can't listen to it since I hate the vocals so much. Anyway, I'm actually listening to Yes right now, and really like it. I think for me it either has to be very heavy (aka death metal) or not heavy at all (Pink Floyd), stuff in the middle just doesn't do it for me. Anymore?
