Stowe Mountain Resort, owned by the AIG, is officially for sale.

“We’re actually putting Stowe up for sale. So it’s official now,” Peter Tulupman, spokesman for AIG, told The Burlington Free Press this morning.

Tulupman declined to comment on how much American International Group Inc. — which is mostly owned by the U.S. government after a sequence of federal bailouts in the wake of Wall Street’s collapse last fall— is seeking for the iconic resort which includes the lavish Stowe Mountain Lodge and the mountain’s operations.

AIG has received a surprising number of unsolicited bids from qualified buyers, Tulupman said. He declined to say who the potential buyers are or if any are from Vermont.

Stowe’s worth was estimated to be at least as much as Killington, which sold in 2007 for $85 million, Doug Nedde, co-owner of Bolton Valley resort, said last fall. Stowe’s value is enhanced, he said, because of permits the resort holds for future real estate development.

The fact that Stowe Mountain Resort is for sale is not a surprise. The ailing insurance giant’s CEO told investors in a conference call last fall that all but several of AIG’s core insurance businesses would be sold. Stowe, however, was not specially mentioned.

“Our hope is that our buyer will continue to develop Stowe in the environmentally respectful master plan that has been eight years in the making,” Tulupman said.

There is no estimate on when the sale will occur, he said.

What would be the monthly payment on a 30 year $100 million dollar loan..if I could put like $500 down..since I wouldn't need a Blue mountain season pass if I owned Stowe..if I owned Stowe..I would give AlpineZone members $3 off lift tickets..JEA!!!!

You could call that the BL-OWE pass GSS!  ;)

I would call it a combines Blue mountain/Stowe pass..I bet I'd be able to trade my apartment for a ski house in Stowe as Stowe passholders might want to sample a eastern PA classic..yes Blue the true..kind of like diet cola..not very filling but a bad aftertaste...

Really you guys want the Stowe ski patrol running around with whistles on speed patrol. They'd probably ban tree skiing too.

I thought we had a thread a couple of months ago about who might buy Stowe and the asking price but I could not find it. Thinking maybe TB started it.

Anyways, so what do you yahoos think the asking price will be but in truth it might not become public until a deal is made.

Assuming it includes the Spruce developement this yahoo is going with $150m......Steamboat went for $265m in a good economy so that's what I'm using as my similar property sample. It could go for a firesale price too.

I'm going with Hank Greenberg and some partners who didn't lose as much money as he did in 2008 since most of his wealth is in AIG stock. The poor guy barely(he's in last place) made the latest list of billionaires in an article in Forbes a couple of months ago.
