Anyone ever use a heart rate monitor while skiing (riding) or biking?

I picked this one up on Woot the other day for $25. I'm stoked to see how many calories I actually burn on a ride and how high the pump is pumping.

Ok reviews on Amazon but for the price, it was hard to resist.

I don't see where downhill skiing will get your heart rate up that much. Bicycling for sure would get the heart racing.

I've used one in the past for mountain biking, just to see what my max and average heart rate was, and the estimated calories burned. I never paid much attention to it while exercising, I never tried to keep within a certain range or anything.

Skiing can get you working out pretty well actually.

i use my polar from time to time....spring skiing last year at SB....burned over 6000 calories, was cool to chart the hr on the computer, the spikes are cool to see...just shows that you need proper nutrition to make it thru 8 hrs of skiing, fried foods and beer just aint gonna cut it (save it for after as recovery) but to stay fueled and make it all day , yoiu need good nutriion

I use my heart rate for road biking all the time. I have a Suunto, which I love as it also gives me a barometric altimeter for elevation gained while riding. Gives me something else to play with while out on the road. I have used it on occasion while mtn biking to see just how high it gets while mtn biking.

I have never used it for skiing....not really an aerobic sport for me.

The Edge 305 warns me with a high pitched beeping when my heart is about to explode.

Which turns out to be quite often.

When I've ridden with a heart rate monitor I found that I went over the recommended max quite a bit myself...

How does that edge work out for you? They seem like good little units.

It's great for biking (more features than I'll ever use), but not good for mapping. The screen is tiny and "grayscale". The newer 705 looks really nice, but it's like $550.

You can pick up the 305 for around $250 with the heart rate and cadence. I read complaints about battery life, but that's from people who must ride for six+ hours without a recharge.

I used it skiing and the battery would last all day. Wait....is 4 hours a full ski day? Pretty cool to upload the information and overlay it on Google Earth.

What do you get for total calories burned for rides? I got over 2300 calories on my ride yesterday.

Wow! I was showing less than 1,100 calories for a 2 hour/7.5 mile ride. I must have been standing around quite a bit.
