I have some friends who went sand skiing at a sand pit in Port Henry, N.Y. back in the 80's. They walked up a conveyor belt and tripped an alarm and got busted. They appeared in court later that day wearing shorts and ski boots. The judge asked the two of them how much money they had. They pulled their pockets out and had $5.40. The judge fined them $5 and said that he couldn't throw the book at skiers but warned them that they would really get it if they or their friends came back.
I got towed around for about 2 miles on dry pavement in a parade one time but that isn't really skiing.

hockey rinks have snow all year long...

Thats an idea.

One time I took my hockey skates to a rink for some open skating. No one was around but everything was open. I put my skates on and a couple of other guys showed up so I went out and was doing laps. Several more guys showed up and we were all doing high speed laps. Funny thing was all these guys and a couple of girls all had speed skates on. Turned out to be a speed skating club working out.

There was a place in Jersey around the 1940's that used to put a bed of pine needles down in the summer, maybe you can find a pine forest on a hill. I read about it in Liz Holste's book, (who occasionally posts here) Skiing In New Jersey?.

Apparently there was a vat of wax at the top and bottom that you would dip your skis in before going up the rope tow and then again before going down. You needed about a 6" bed of pine needles.

For the pine needle skiing in New Jersey - I was told by people who actually skied it that the entire slope was covered with about 6 inches of pine needles (trucked in from the surrounding area).

The slope was first cleared of all of the rocks and brush and smoothed out. Then the pine needles were put on the slope. there were long pans of kerosene at the bottom of the hill that you dipped your long WOOD skis in before you went up the rope tow. At the top of the hill there was another long pan of kerosene that you dipped your long WOOD skis in before you took your run down the hill. People stood on the slope with rakes to rake the pine needles back on to the slope so the other skiers could also take their runs.

There are pictures in my book "Skiing In New Jersey?"

The plastic carpets they used to put down on the slopes. They should bring that back.

How about grass skiing. They had it at Vernon Valley for a short time.

If Xanadu ever opens you'll be able to ski all year long!

Don't know if this is legit or a pipe dream. Seems like a good idea though.

http://www.uski365.com/

I'd drive down to NC if they built it.

While the website seems legit, it's hard to fathom the amount of money this would cost. It would appear more of fun idea that someone cooked up. That being said, the Smokey's get the most visitors each year of any National Park...
