we can all argue about what our personal top 5 would be but i don't think any of us would have one that looks like this:

1. Killington/ Pico, VT
2. Saddleback, ME
3. Gunstock Mountain, NH
4. Loon Mountain, NH
5. Cranmore Mountain, NH

Why not???

Do you have that list?

No but isn't Loon like 2k+ vert and very popular..people love Saddleback and Gunstock..Cranmore is small but apparently has alot of history..I'm just surprised not to see Stowe which is the favorite in the east for the majority of skiers and riders..

The top 3 alone are...incongruous, I guess. Kmart and Saddleback have opposite vibes. I don't have anything against Gunstock but I wouldn't put it in the top 10 of any category unless the categories are "night skiing" or "mountains located in New Hampshire".

When you look at the stats, pictures, trail maps, nite skiing, grooming, lifts they are very similar. I'm hard pressed to think of 2 areas so similar. They both even have six-pack chairs.

The fact that a Whiteface regular even knows about Blue mountain is flattering to me..:daffy::daffy:

Loon has a lack of steep and natural terrain and has about 1/2 the natural snow vs. N. VT. It does have one of the best, if not the biggest serious parks around though (judged by number of fancy looking elements that are way too big for me). If you weight accessibility and parks heavily I can see how it could do well. Gunstock?? There's just no way to justify this, it's a good local and day trip hill. They do have the fastest tubing hill I've seen. Placing it ahead of Stowe, Sugarbush, Sugarloaf, Jay Peak, Cannon, Wildcat, Mt. Snow, Stratton, Okemo, Sunday River, etc is unexplainable to me.

Gunstock ain't top-3 in night skiing or New Hampshire, either. I did Wednesday night beer league there one year. They only light the lower part of the hill and it's as flat as a pancake. I've hiked the mountain many, many times in the off-season since Gunstock and Mount Major are the closest things with any vertical from Portsmouth, NH. Unless they have a bizarre weather event where Gunstock gets a big dump and nobody else does, it's not worth buying a lift ticket if you're an advanced skier. The place is fine as a day trip area for kids and novices-low intermediates looking to get some cheap days in. That won't get you in any top-10 list.

If you weight the selection critera the right way, you can certainly make a good case for Killington as #1. You'd have to give big priority to drive time & ease of drive, length of season, night life, sheer size of the resort, and enough natural snow to have reliable tree skiing and natural snow trails.

“Over 3500 readers voted" ...as far as statistics goes here, this is not a very large survey population. I think I was one of the 3500 that voted from a link on a website.
