I go 'surfing' a couple of times a season on my body board. I do aspire to actually 'surf' and know I will eventually get big boy equipment, but right now, it's me on a body board when I go, no wet suit either. I'm pretty much the equivalent of a skier on skinny skis, in rear entry boots, wearing jeans and my jacket is wide open. Me = LAME CITY

but I'm excited like the night before a once every five years powder day right now.

Post Hurricane Bill waves on Hampton Beach tomorrow are gonna be On Like Donkey Kong......sickness.

Enjoy your powder day!

When you said you surfed I thought you meant that you had a real surf board and stuff. I'm a little disappointed...

Today was killer for those on actual surf boards. For body and boogie board surfers, things didn't line up that great. The surf was HUGE. 6 to 12+ feet. The tides didn't work out so great.

Low tide today was around 8 AM, high tide was around 2. I headed to the beach around noon wanting to wait a solid three hours after low tide for any riptide to pass as that's when it's strongest. I got to the main beach and it was closed to swimming. North Hampton Beach has no life guards though and I knew it was at your own risk there. I talked to the life guard to get his opinion on the conditions and he said while dangerous, they really weren't that bad. They closed the main beach primarily to get people thinking safety in other locations and keep young kids out of the water.

As I was talking to the life guard, the most entertaining happening of the day occurred. A rogue wave came barreling onto shore for about a 75 foot wide stretch of beach and came all the way inland to the sea wall some 100 feet past the terminus of the other waves. It totally swamped about 30 groups of people. Hilarious. I snapped a quick photo of the people scrambling

After this I headed to North Beach where at 1PM it just wasn't all that great. I'm no pro, but in my experience, the best time to body surf or boogie board is about an hour after low tide. At that point depending on the beach, you can get out to wear the waves build up in about chest deep water enabling you to push off and ride up the crest. Also because the tide is coming in, you get a bit longer ride. At high tide, where you want to be for catching the waves, the water is ten feet deep, where you really need a surf board to safely get to and take advantage of the swell.

I got one decent photo of a surfer, though it was on one of the smaller waves. There were definitely wave easily twice this high

I took off from the beach and then went back around 4:30 as the tide was going out. It was pretty decent for body boarding, but still a bit too deep. The break was still too far out for a body surfer or boogie boarder to catch the crests, but the sheer power and volume of washed out waves were still enough to get up and ride for a good distance, which I've never really experienced. If you don't get sucked in and up to the crest, normally you pretty much still still while the wave heads on into shore. Today, no matter when you got it, the force was great enough to bring you in.

one more random photo of washed out waves that you can tell at that point are well over head. Peak wave height was probably four times higher than the third row out of washed out waves. Definitely a BIG water day.

wish I didn't have to work tomorrow. I bet low tide in the morning will be sickness

I can barely move right now from the waves today. We had some pretty nasty weather last night on the water. Got up at 530 to go and check on my parents house on North Beach Island, got to be on CNN at 7 am. Pleasant Bay was flat but the ocea side was a totally different story. The waves were one after another. Went back home for a few hours then went back out to the house with some friends and spent about an hour getting our asses handed to ourselves, I have sand in every part of my body. The water was VERY strong. My 2.5 year old son got his wave wash out christening today, shook him for a minute butr my buddy caught him, he was playing chase me with the waves and got caught. It will toughen him up, at least it didn't phase him, had another wash out a few minutes later and at that point he was done. Hopefully the seas will let down so that we don't lose much more beach, hopefully the house will make it through another winter.

/Pine Point?

So you're flying out of Portland?

Why not Higgins? IMO, Higgins is the best beach in Southern Maine.

Family friend is a meteorologist and sent an email today that there is some stuff stirring up off the southern states that could lead to some north east wind this weekend probably kick up the water again. I hope not, we don't have much more beach we can lose this time of year. It is supposed to be building up.

Sunday 8/23 was my last day at LBI so we took the kids to the beach early in the morning to get a little bit of time on the sand before we hit the road for home. The waves were huge and there were a lot of surfers out already. My son and I waded in the surf and it was pretty rough. I shot a 1 and a half minute video clip of the waves and people surfing but I can't post video.
