Forty-one percent of skiers are female, though the proportion of women to men varies depending on the region; for example, in the Southeast, 46 percent of skiers are female, and in the Pacific West, the proportion is 35 percent female. “We notice females dropping out a little earlier than males,” says Hawks. “In their early to mid 30s, they begin dropping out of the sport.”

That explains it right there. Overall, sure, it might be 60-40 men-women when you're counting kids, too. But adult skiers--nah. As for why women in their early to mid 30s begin dropping out of the sport, I'd be willing to bet that has to do with starting families. Whether it's because they can't afford it anymore, are pregnant, or are busy with their kids' activities. Women tend to make that sacrifice more than men do.

I guess for a few moments during the day, 41% of the skiers are female. During apres ski it morphs into 3% female.

Whenever I hear women complaining that they cannot meet any men I tell them to learn how to ski.

The only time I skied with more women then men was when we lucked into an airline convention at Sun Valley. The second night we were in the community hot tub when 5 nice looking women walked over. They were Australian flight attendants who had just arrived, were staying in the townhouse next to ours (the side with the common door), had been drinking (Australian-so somewhat redundent), and dropped their robes to join us topless. Sometimes things you did not even know to wish for can happen.

I believe it but I'm sure the % of skier visits by females are way way way less..as most of the people I know skiing 50+ days per year are Male and the female skiers I know are mainly only putting in a few days a year..interesting though as demographics are cool..

In our group of 8 ish that regularly meet up at our local hill, there are 2 women who are regularly there.

Occasionally we have a couple more join us but they aren't there more than 4 or 5 times a year.

Yup. I see far fewer female die hards that get out for more than just the family trip. You can see that just based on the demographics of this board. Though I suspect men are more likely in general to use ski forums, we have very few female contributors to this forum. Single digit number for regular posters and the most frequent posters in the top 100 are only two or three in number.

Alot of the girls on match.com who list skiing as one of their interests haven't skied since high school..they like to ski, they just don't go. One woman at the local bar doesn't ski anymore because she said the local skiing is too crowded....it is crowded on busy weekends and select evening when there are 30 busses of school groups but otherwise it's not that bad but perception is everything..

Yea I guess I am lucky that my girlfriend loves snowboarding and wants to get 50+ days in as much as I do. Makes life easier.

On the flip side, I'm the person in my house that is passionate about skiing. If I didn't pursue it, I'm not sure how much Terry would go. In fact, I'm pretty sure he'd get less than 15 days a year.

In all honesty, I'm not normal.
I've always hung around the guys, work with nothing but guys, spend my time at the motorcycle track with guys, and ski with the guys.
I tend to act and react like guys when it comes to my sports, with the exception that I let the weird funk get in my head and over think things which gets me frustrated at times.
That is a female trait.
But usually I can sit out for 5-10 minutes, shake the funk and get back out there.

I think the persentage of women on the slopes is directly related to the weather. Guys will ski in just abiut anything, when the temp. drops the ladies seem to find other things to do.

Women tend to get colder quicker than men. Make sure your lady always has extra layers and I keep hand warmers on stand by.

I bought my wife boot heats one year for Christmas. Great investment in our ablity to stay out longer together.

maybe but the majority of skiers out there..men included are fairweather skiers..

41% of skiers are females. Yeah OK and in that survey 60 % of the females did not tell the truth.
