If you use a GPS while skiing, what kind do you use? Where do you upload your "data" to view it? Are there any Android Apps for my phone?

I'm thinking about getting one for mountain skiing, MTB and hiking, but don't really know much about them.

ITrailmap3D for skiing, MotionXGPS for biking, on the iphone. I assume there are android versions.

Do they work if you are not in cell service? I know the navigation on the droid cuts out when i dont have cell service, which is usually when I need the navigation the most

Good question. I am not sure of the answer. But I can tell you this, on Itrailmap3d, the map is downloaded to the device, so it is there regardless of whether there is cell service.

If you use a GPS while skiing, what kind do you use?

I use a Garmin Dakota 10. It has a nice interface, and is somewhat compact, so it fits nicely in my pocket and does not have an antenna.

I use it for hiking, biking, and skiing.

For skiing I like the max speed feature and tracking where I'm going. I can reset my max speed and trip odometer throughout the day.

Where do you upload your "data" to view it?

There is software that came with the GPS that you can upload your "route" to. I have some pictures that show the interface and what you can do. Hope this helps.

I noticed at a lot of ski areas get spotty cell reception, so I wouldn't rely on a phone, unless it has a GPS chip built in. The GPS feature on phones does drain the battery, at least with my roommate's experience. So if you do decide to go the phone route, make sure you have enough juice at the beginning of the day.

dmc, not that it matters but where is that data from? just curious because i like mountains.

anyway, on the east inbounds i dont think there is any need for a gps, buuuut as stated before the max speed function is pretty cool. I see the use for logging vert too but my altimeter does that already.

Kashmir - 2 runs...
Gondi trip up - lower and upper
quick hike to up to a ridge then back down to the upper gondi
Another no hike run but we ended that way below our hotel in a town which involved some skinning.

+1 on the Garmin60CSx. You can also use for auto navigation (it does not talk to you though).

like others, I love checking max speed, total vertical and miles traveled.

dmc - how did you do the graph? :dunce:
