Thanks for the detailed post.

Despite the existence of the hotel Burke is and will always be just a ski area, not a resort. And that’s fine. These issues all sound pretty expected, and I’d just never visit Burke and stay on site and eat all my meals on site and etc. it’s not for all that - its a scrappy ski area in northeastern Vermont.

The ticketing issue sounds like shit tho

Thanks for the detailed report, I hope you send it to the new management as well. I am willing to give them some slack in this their first season. But by next year I will be disappointed if they don’t iron out some of the kinks, for instance I shouldn’t have to stand in a long at the ticket booth (delaying everyone else in line as well as myself) to use my Berkshire East pass, I should be able to go straight to lift. Anyone know if Burkes RFID system is compatible with the one used at Berkshire East ?

For sure. I'm from the NEK originally, so we stayed there to be close to family. I got in some good skiing. I think it is a great value. My wife and daughter were not happy with the hot water situation with good reason. I got mostly decent showers, but was in early. I did get a cold shower on NYE that was not fun.

As I said, I hope that those who are new to Burke will not be disappointed. Many family members and friends (and I) repeated the point that we want the Mountain to survive and thrive.

Skiing burke today..place is skiing great.

But

They have a policy in the cafeteria that if grab something from self serve you have to buy it which, sure whatever. Anyhow I took a cup of chili and without actually picking up the second cup just slid it to the front on the rack for the next person. I've worked alot of passes so its literally my nature.

Anyhow the cook took w
wayyyyy too much pleasure informing me ill now have to go back and buy the second cup. I rolled.my eyes, bought it.and gave it to a stranger.

What a shit fucking policy to enforce so strictly. I've been in hospitality for over 3 decades and never seen anything quite like that.

I’m not following you. Did you just pass on one cup and ask for another? Was this at the Hotel or Sherburne?

That's absolutely absurd. I don't even understand what the logic would be in you having to buy something simply because you touched it.

"No" is a complete sentence, you don't have to do things just because the cook has an opinion.

And unless that is a very clearly posted policy I doubt any other staff would be interested in arguing it out with you.

Yeah, this is bizarre. It’s also consistent with what I saw regarding lack of staff and some of those that they had were not as polished as they could be. Was this the Hotel or the Base Lodge?

Right where I want to be
i have seen something like that at Busch Gardens in VA. I grabbed a plate but only lifted it up about an inch then decided on some different barbecue. While they didn't make me buy both they actually threw the other one away. My wife scolded me.

I get them being understaffed but not having hot water in the hotel is inexcusable. That's not a staffing issue unless they're too cheap to pay for a repair.

Or, given its pretty clear they were dealing with more business than they probably have dealt with in a while (if ever), it was a momentary break down and it got fixed.

Everyone wishes Burke success, but then if things are freaking perfect, puts them on blast. Typical AZ fare. Burke has to overcome a decade of deferred maintenance under the receivership, plus whatever the hell Q and prior owners neglected also. So lets call it a solid 20 years.

Yeah, as said, this sounds like someone who had been told at a different place that if someone touches it they buy it. Who knows. Maybe a health inspector dinged them on this recently. It still sounds a bit over-the-top.

I can't see a health inspector caring about touching of sealed containers unless VT is super weird.

If a grocery store had this policy, the amount of cherry tomato or raspberry containers I'd have to buy would be astronomical!

Fixed it for you. ;) And yes, Vermont can be super weird. Most folks in the NEK think that they are in NH as opposed to Vermont for multiple reasons.....but that is for another day.
