Trip Report: Bonjour de Estrie! This is Day One of the snowmonster's tour of the Eastern Townships.

After spending a day and a half eating our way through Montreal, little snowmonster and I headed to Bromont which is about 45 minutes from Montreal on Autoroute 10. I planned an afternoon and early evening of skiing. I got a 4 hour ticket for CAN$40. Apparently, the price changed at 2:45 pm when I got there and that was a very good deal.

Coverage was very good. Bromont's trails are mostly wide groomers. Perfect for cruising. There are a number of steep sections but nothing too pushy. The region had not received any snowfall in a bit and most of the glades were closed. There was one wide-open low-angle glade (Atlanta) that was fun to ski in though rocks and stumps poked out a bit. There are 7 sides of the mountain and I was able to ski all of them except the west side (closed). Snow operations routinely closed off certain trail at around 4 pm to groom them.

The night skiing operation was amazing. Basically, the whole mountain was lit-up and you could ski anywhere, even the low angle glades. I called it a night at around 6:30 since the winds were really biting. Overall impression was that Bromont reminded me of Sunapee but larger and with lights. Definitely a cruising type family mountain.

I've heard that Bromont is deceptive- the front face appears to be somewhat small, but when you take the chair up then go over the top, it opens into a series of pods that go on & on, no?

The front face / original side is still my favorite. The other side add many trails, but with the exception of Versant du lac (Lake side), the best fall-line skiing is on the original trails.

The original Bromont hosted the World Cup Finals in 1986. Women's GS and Men's Slalom with a parallel of the best WCup skiers on the third day.


Trail names:
The original trail all had local town names, they extended with the other sides. I'm not a huge fan of the place (maybe it's because I broke my collarbone in a crash with another skiing 25 years ago?). That being said, I do believe it has the best night time terrain in Quebec.
