Kicked off my 46th ski season on my 54th birthday while my wife and I and our oldest kid are over in Copenhagen for the week visiting our youngest kid who has been in Copenhagen since mid August for a semester abroad program at the Copenhagen Business School.
None of us had every been on an artificial ski slope with the plastic mat surface, so what better way to try it out than on rental gear while skiing in jeans!
The facility itself its actually a pretty neat multi use purpose of a building. The slopes are built on the roof and around the sides of the largest trash incinerator in Denmark, and consists of 3 magic carpets and 1 platter pull. The magic carpets service the lower roughly 1/2 of the 70 meter or so total vertical drop and each one services a little steeper terrain as you work your way up the slope. The platter pull services the top roughly 1/2 of the slope and has the steepest terrain and even a 4 gate permanent race course on it.
Skiing on it is definitely different than on natural snow, and I don't just think it was the rental gear with edges that weren't very sharp. You had no issue sliding down the mats, but turning, even after the full hour long session had come to an end, often felt like you were trying to turn on a hockey rink with no edges! Definitely a memorable skiing experience with the family!
I'll post up some pics when I can get a decent photo resizer!
