Yep, everything that UK said and more! Well, this is one of the days that I didn't fall all day! :) What a great mountain! Just wish we didn't live so far away from it. Loved the fact that it wasn't as crowded as other ASC mountains. Still working on form.....now that I have great boots that fit well and help, thanks to Jeff B., the boot fitter. I even hit a few moguls, albeit kinda small, but what a confidence builder. When we go to VT, I'd have to say I'd rather go to Pico, than Killington, for an ASC mountain. I do love Sugarbush though too. Maybe our next trip to VT......Awesome day!

Well conditions early Saturday morning weren't the best, as you may have heard from the news. Even if the conditions were ideal and driving the speed limit the whole way, especially when you get into VT, it is still at least 2hr 45min. We live on the east side of Barrington as well, nearest Rochester, in which I drive every day to Concord, and no matter how I cut it, it takes between 45-50min to get from home to work. Our road(private) is not the best and it takes at least 3-5 min just to get off that.

Luckily you missed the big pile up crash on I-93 in Concord....just heard about it.

And we just got back from Pico. Man, what a day.

Best day at Pico yet this season. Hits on Birch Glades, Summit Glades, Stampede, and Sunset '71 was mint. 49er was actually good as well!!!

I was almost a statistic on that one...

I was going downhill towards the I-89 exit and saw traffic stopping in front of me. The car in front spun out and crunched into another car. I put my brakes on and the ABS kicked in but my car wasn't really slowing down. My wife told the kids to brace for a collision but by some minor miracle I came to a stop before making impact.

I made sure I got out of the way and at the time it looked like there were about 20 - 30 cars and a school bus involved. I saw several cars off of the road on the right as well. I guess that there was one fatality behind us...van vs. tractor trailer.

Yeah, that was pretty crazy, when we got to a gathering at a Mexican restaruant that evening in Manchester, we heard about the accident.....on the drive up we hit a a few white outs. Luckily during one of the white outs, we had to make a pit stop. We were in Concord pretty early, about 6:30am....somewhere thereabouts.....

Skier75, did have the same jacket that you're wearing in your avatar? If you did, me and my wife saw you a number of times. We noticed you cause we both commented on how you look so much like JimG. We ran into you a number of times :)

What caused the accident?

I like how you decided to get yourself out of the way. Anyone carren right by you into the pile up?
I don't know about the initial cause, but there was a lot of ice on the downhill stretch approaching the I-89 interchange. I'm guessing that someone was going down the road at highway speed and they lost control. Once traffic was stopped, everyone (myself included) tried to stop on the same stretch and slid on the ice.

We did think briefly about handing around, but I didn't want to be a target and there were plenty of people around to help others. Didn't see what was going on behind me other than a few cars, but I figured that there were more accidents given the road conditions.

I-93 had a lot of additional ice patches through Concord...it was nice to get off at a rest stop.

Congratulations on excellent driving - sensible speeds, good judgement got you to the slopes to enjoy a full day of schussing without peril. 5 minutes saved on the road are usually squandered elsewhere. Sounds like you had a safe distance between you and the bedlam. Most pileups I've seen were caused by tailgating and excessive speed.

Unless you could have helped, you did the right thing - moving on and out of the way. Nice going.

Kinda interesting story about road maintenence. I took backroads up to Crotched about that same time of day and had no issues at all, with just as much snowfall.

Bump on this incident due to yesterday's crash...

NHDOT seems to do a good job overall (especially compared with how the GS parkway was when I drove it a few days after the Dec storm) but sometimes the roads can get icy nevertheless. Combine that with typical New England driving (i.e., aggressive) and unfortunately these types of incidents are bound to happen.
