2011 Boating Thread

Been a pretty cool spring so I haven't been in a hurry but it looks like Sunday will finally be launch day. Hopefully the water temps climb and we can start skiing soon. Plans for the summer include a trip to Lake George in August and hopefully a trip to Lake Bomoseen to check it out along with Lake Wallenpaupack in PA for at least a day. Hopefully the price of gas does not become an issue.

That's what I'm thinking, too- Sunday launch day, if I can get a last coat of paint on early SUnday morning, launch sunday afternoon.

Fortunately, mine's a sailboat, so gas prioces don't bother me so much (and the dock is across the street). Named the boat 28 cents, since that was the price of gas in 1962 when she was built.

Getting a sailing card this summer so I can take out dinghies from the university boat house on the Charles. They have mostly FJs and Tech Js. It's a great way to spend the lunch break.

I have a solo canoe, flat water boat, Sawyer DY Special, I use a kayak paddle to paddle it. I live on the Susquehanna River. I've been paddling to the city and back, 12 mile round trip, takes about three hours, great workout. I love being out on the water, I pass through my childhood swimming/ fishing hole en-route, brings back fond memories. I've yet to take it out this year, but the river's water level has dropped considerably, maybe this weekend.

I'd like to try water skiing again. I've only done it once, about 30 years ago. I wonder how snow skiing skills translate to the liquid form?

Had an eye opening expirence on the battenkill river a few weeks ago, we hit some hairy rapids with a little to much gear in the canoe. On a brighter note I got the boat uncovered today and i plan to get a few casts in before the weekend. Luckly lake bomoseen is not to high, unlike Champlain the water level is easily managed. they are still 2 feet above flood level (about 6 or 7 feet above normal) boat launchs are completely under water, Rt 2 to get into the islands is a mess, not to mention the amount of camps/houses that are flooded. lets hope the rain lets up

I'm so freakin' busy the boat yard is doing all the work. Bottom's painted. Hull waxed. Graphics and registration numbers are on. They replaced the prop shaft and cutlass bearing at the previous owner's expense. They installed a couple of cleats on the deck for spring lines. They still have to do the bright work---toe rail, companionway hatch. They still have to install a cam cleat for the main halyard to make it easier to single hand. I told them to do the toe rail if there's a break in the weather and splash me. Time to go sailing.

Winni? That waters got to be cold. Heck Hopatcong here in NJ is freezing right now. May be a while before the ski's come out.
