One of the greatest underdog stories in sports unfolded, USA vs USSR, Ice Hockey at Lake Placid. Anyone remember it? I watched the TV in awe that night. My dad got me hooked to hockey and his team. This game ranks so much higher in emotion than any sporting game I've witnessed. I got the DVD a couple years back and I still get goosebumps from listening to it. Too bad hockey is dead now.....

technically the olympics is not part of the majors even though the majors break for it and let the players play for their countries ;) looks like we might have a little hockey east rivalry on the forums.... UML grad here :)

HAHA...teeeheee...oh...heh..ha. ooh.

Good one.

Seriously... how is it possible to play a team (UML) and lose 0-7 one night and win 8-3 the next?! We suffered from inconsistency during those weeks. But, like Brady taking over for Bledsoe, I think Regan is our man "'tween the poles".

But I'll never knock UML... they are one of my best customers!

UMaine Hockey is big here! We have a young team right now, but things can only get better with practice.

OK, so I WILL knock U Maine. They suck.

I'd say watching that game was the highlight of my sports-watching experience. There hasn't been a game I've seen since that got me that excited. Maybe that's why I really don't care for following any sports now. After that, does any other game even matter?

I was too young and not in this country so I guess I can't say that it moved me, even though I understand how in the circumstances of that time it was a big deal- especially during the Cold War.

Biggest game for me was probably the Duke v UConn b-ball final in 1999. I was there and it was pretty crazy.

Duke sucks :D

I was living 2500 miles away in Tucson, AZ (upstate NY native) when the US beat the Soviets that night. 2 of my uncles were at the game and actually got to witness history, while I was 2 time zones away watching on delayed TV like everyone else. Then - one of my idiot roommates barges in in the middle of the second period while the game was tied 2-2 and announces that the US won. Even though he brought good news, we were ready to kill him (mostly because he was an dweeb that we all hated).

Anyway, that was the biggest sporting event of my life until the Sox won the Series last year. I can die a happy man now.

Lifelong RPI Engineers fan here. When they won the NCAA championship in 1985, Albany NY actually rocked all night long. ECAC Hockey rules. The wife went to Colgate, so big rivalry......

I remember watching it on TV - it was amazing - I was riveted. I was just amazed that the US was in the game, and then to see them win it! --- awesome.
