I dislike going skiing during President's Week due to the crowds. I think this year at Mont Orford it will be better due to the new summit lift. I hope to be there at some point between the 14th and 18th.

Sounds great.. does sound like a lot of driving though. Have you Mapquested it?

The conditions should be good. There hasn't been a lot of natural snow here in northern Ma and I'm not sure that VT or NH got much more, but I'm hoping they did.

Let's hope for a whopper of a storm or two before you get there!

ski trip

well, I really like to drive, I really like touring thru the mountains and I'm driving a VW Jetta turbo diesel which is good for around 42mpg in hill country and 50mpg on the flats. This is sort of an exploratory trip to all the ski areas I've never been to. I've always sort of gravitated to Stowe/Sugarbush area.I plan to ski during the day and depart for the next place around 4:00 pm arriving after dark. I'm also looking to stop at Bretton Woods I'm looking for a nice mellow area to take my wife for a long week end.I will try to post photos upon my return, Mark

Suggestion - blow off Sunday River and get the real hardcore Maine expererience at Sugarloaf. It will put about another 90 minutes and 100 miles roundtrip on your car, but it's worth it. Sunday River is certainly mucho fun at night, and it's hard to argue with White Heat if you're into sick bumps, but Sunday River's terrain has always frustrated me - there are a million runs, but they're short (<1000' vertical in many cases) before you have to get back on another lift. Sugarloaf has serious vertical (2600') with lots of LONG nasty runs that will burn your legs off. If we get some natural snow between now and your trip, the snowfields could open, and no other areas has anything like it on the East Coast. The locals really know how to ski and they take it very seriously. The village at Sugarloaf is pretty limited, and the surrounding towns (Kingfield, Carrabassett Valley) don't offer a whole lot more, but there's fun to be had there. It depends on what you are looking for. If you won't get back to that neck of the woods again soon, you may want to consider it.......

mrw....I loved those kinds of trips I used to take when I had my 1992 VW Jetta Eco-Diesel (pre TDI ). I miss the 45mpg I used to get going up to Jay / Orford. For some reason everybody wanted me to drive....

When Daimler-Chrysler puts a Mercedes 4 or 5 cylinder diesel engine in the Jeep Liberty, I want it!!!!!
